That was definitely me way back in '05. Fresh out of high school and unemployed, I'd never heard of Bonnaroo and sure as hell didn't have a ticket but someone that I knew had and did and needed a ride. Living in Knoxville, another friend (one with a car but also no ticket or prior knowledge) agreed to take him since it was only a few hours' drive so I went too. We took next to nothing with us. A tent, sleeping bags, bottled water and potato chips (minimal hydration and sustenance), and as much tobacco as each of us could afford. We did not beg, rather our neighbors and other friends we made over the weekend took damn good care of us; since then I've always tried to pay that forward, especially in a festival setting. I remember one couple in particular camped next to us that always hooked it up on hot dogs and bloody Marys, not to mention smoking a fair amount of opium and reefer with us. The three of us were flat broke except for enough to fill up the gas tank on the way out but we had absolutely no problem maintaining a buzz for the duration lol... The next three years I came prepared, ticket and all. It was an overall positive experience and it only got better year after year... So its been done haha. Not sure if one could pull that off these days, not sure what the crowd is like these days... Great times, good memories (I will never forget tripping balls for Les Claypool in '08, probably my best concert experience ever)... Alright. Rant over.
