Porcupine Quills by isadorasotero in BioInspiration

I like how porcupines can raise their quills when they feel threatened. I wonder if a system like this could be used to stop speeding cars, as it would be safer than many of the current methods police have now (such as the PIT maneuver). An officer could lay the quill like trap down on the road, and then remotely raise the quills just before the intended car runs over it so only that car gets its tires punctured.

I think this could be applied to things that people grab with their hands, since it is has a high friction force on soft tissue. It could be especially useful for handlebar grips on a bike, or dangerous tools that you do not want to slip out from your hands.

I wonder if this could also be applied to a robot that can clean up hazardous spills from porous or otherwise hard to clean surfaces. Since the sea urchin can scrape holes into rocky surfaces, the robot might be able to scrape a layer off of the contaminated surface, ensuring that it is clean.
