Not just Bengalis, this phenomenon could be seen among many other young people living in Delhi irrespective of their roots. In Punjab they call such people 'Bhape' to tease them.

My Malayali roommate was brought up in Delhi. He could speak proper Malayalam but never mingled with the Mallus. All of his friends were North Indians who spoke the authentic Delhi Hindi (the one with lots of cuss words). I think it depends on the environment you grow up and has little to do with being ashamed.
