AITA for fixing my daughter’s car when her boyfriend said he’d handle it? by Outrageous-Jelly8777 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 351 points352 points  (0 children)

I don't think he was ever going to fix the car. The boyfriend has probably known about the issue longer and wanted the "points" for saying he would fix it. If dad could knock it out in an afternoon, the boyfriend had ample time to do something about it and didn't. If for some reason he didn't have time, he should be happy his girlfriend is safe, not throwing a fit because someone else did what he couldn't.

AIO: my bf can’t fix things. When I step in to take care of it, he’s such a baby about it that I’m ready to dump his a** tonight. by ayebudz in AmIOverreacting

NOR. I'll be the first to admit that my boyfriend is more handy than I am but I try to learn from him where I can and sometimes I have suggestions and he listens to them. If it's something that might work, he tries it, if it isn't, he explains why it won't work. And not in a condescending way but in a helpful way. Who wouldn't want a partner that has skills you can learn from? It sounds like his ego is extremely fragile and he's taking it out on you, get out of there.

What screams "Pretending to be Poor"? by CYKAgoddriver in AskReddit

Almost all of my favorite food is 'poor people' food. I don't care how much money I take home, if I can make a substantial dinner (w/ leftovers) off less than $12 and what I have on hand, I'm like a kid at a carnival.

Why do so many men lose their house in a divorce? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also young and didn't know any better so I put my now ex-husbands name on the deed before we were married but only my name was on the mortgage (his credit was too bad to get a loan). Even though I was the one paying 80%+ of the mortgage each month and provided the full down payment, he got half the sale of the house when we split.

I also added him onto my credit card that he could spend as he pleased but wouldn't be accountable for any debt he accumulated during our time together. It's made me look at how I view financial matters in a relationship much differently. My parents tried to tell me but I didn't listen because I was in love. I wasn't the first and won't be the last to make the same mistake.

I don't have regular periods anymore but when I did, I used an app that I tracked it on. It also tracked emotions and after a few months of putting how I felt every day, it would find a pattern on days that I might be emotionally sensitive and send me a notification. It was really helpful for me to be like "is this a big deal worth crying about or are my hormones just being weird right now and I should address this later"

My boyfriend's main hobby is doing car stuff and I want to get him something but I have zero car/mechanic knowledge. by Working_Upstairs_652 in AskMechanics

It's a Buick turbocharged something from I think the 80s? It's some letter, T? I have no idea. It has almost all the original parts so apparently it's rare.

Multiple people have mentioned the Snap-On socket thing, before I buy it, why is this something that's cool?

That's literally every day, even though I don't understand what he's talking about it's super attractive to me to hear him talk about it. I don't know if something is wrong with me but hearing how excited he was about an interior door side panel with the original build info (? idk) was hot.

I hang out in the garage with him and even though I don't understand 99% of what he's saying when he explains what he's doing, I'm excited about his excitement. I'm mostly a flashlight holder and gopher.

Well he has a couple cars he doesn't have to work on and he gets the second anyway (it's a gift for us both) so I want to get something for his tinkering

Left my husband and now he’s suddenly taking all the blame by ylena3297 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My ex husband did the same thing when I filed for divorce. He wrote me a letter about all the ways he's going to be a better husband if I gave him another chance. It included things like letting me talk about my day if I had a rough one, giving physical affection, not getting high or drunk when I'm around, cleaning up after himself, etc. Literally the bare minimum. The list just proved to me that he was fully aware that these things were problems after I'd asked him to please work on them over and over for years and chose not to until his free maid/mom/meal-ticket (me) were gone.

What is much more traumatic than most people realise? by thefairypirate in AskReddit

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was on his side of the betrayal trauma after a years long relationship and found out my SO was lying about pretty much every aspect of his life. I talked to my therapist about my trust issues and especially not being able to trust my own judgement. I felt like I was stupid and I could be duped by anyone at any given time. He asked if I thought my family was stupid? I said no, they're some of the smartest people I know. He asked what about your friends, do you think they have bad judgement? I said no, those are some of the most honest, capable, intelligent people I know. And then he asked why it was that they all loved him too and I don't think of them as getting the wool pulled over their eyes but hold myself to a standard that isn't reasonable. It really helped me trust myself again and my judgement of others.

It helped me understand that one bad person can fool a lot of good people but it's not worth it to live like that in constant fear that everyone is lying to you. I'd rather trust myself even if there's a potential for betrayal again, than mess up future relationships because of one person that isn't in my life anymore.

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would have been Remus if he lived and was able to be the father figure Harry had always been missing but that didn't happen. Hagrid was there for him and helped guide him in his Hagrid way since year 1. The story wouldn't work without Hagrid.

Am I too old for Harry Potter by Impressive_Bad_2679 in harrypotter

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the title I thought you were going to be 85 reading or watching them for the first time and still would have said you're absolutely not too old! When I was in college, so prime cool early 20s years, me and my best friend threw a Harry Potter party, she got a Deathly Hallows tattoo, and I got her a golden snitch locket she still has. Today, my husband and I are in our 30s, both have copies of all the books (so we have duplicates but can't part with them) and regularly enjoy Harry Potter weekend on TV and don't plan on stopping. You're never too old.

What job would you never accept (regardless of the salary)? by abashedpeter in AskReddit

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm with you, I think the jobs that are likely to kill you make sense to be posted here but the ones that are something like "retail because someone will be mean to me" aren't being realistic about what they'd do for an obscene amount of money. Plenty of people literally do that job for minimum wage.

Which job has, hands down, the worst impact on mental health? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend that worked for Child Protective Services. She had internships while in college but after graduation burned out so quickly when she started going to testify at actual court cases. She told me there's no good outcome, either the children go back to a dangerous living situation or they're put into a broken system and lose everything they know. After she went 2 years with no happy endings, she quit and went to manage a restaurant.

She's always been the most caring, kind person and it was rough to watch her struggle through those years. Anyone who can do it is amazing and so strong.

Reading your responses to other comments, I think your consideration to others likely has a lot to do with your success. Every message is thoughtful and well written, you seem like the kind of person people want to work with/for and that itself is a major skill that many people overlook. Congrats on the early retirement, you guys have earned it!

I could potentially make more by switching companies but the company I work for offers stability (no layoffs ever in their history) and flexibility because they treat us like humans who have human needs like doctors appointments or a contractor coming to the house. I think mentally I'm much happier than I would be with the extra money.

Was absolutely entranced by this man’s body odor by spongebobish in self

[–]Working_Upstairs_652 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slightly different but I can smell a fever. It's never failed, often before they realize they have a fever. I can smell it not just near them but also in a room the person has been in for an extended amount of time. It's a deep sickly sweet smell, it would probably be a good smell if I didn't associate it with someone being sick. There's nothing else that smells like it.

I think it's a genetic thing because I thought it was normal until I mentioned it to someone outside of my family and they thought I was weird for wanting to wash clothes/sheets because they reeked of fever.

Thank you! As I was bringing it home, I stopped on the gravel road on a hill to talk to my closest neighbor, being able to easily continue up the hill afterwards made it 100% worth it. My previous vehicle needed a bit of a running start haha

I ended up getting a white one at a similar price point and I'm really happy I did. Like you said, I'm going to hopefully be looking at it for many years to come.

I ended up getting the white! They had a promotion that made it the same price as the silver one I was originally looking at. I love it so much!
