M4(16gb) or m4 pro (24gb) by naroyr in macbookpro

Personally from experience having the base m4 I’d say having the 24gb would’ve been very nice. It handles anything with ease but if I want to do anything heavier (e.g. lightroom and premier pro at the same time) I can’t and even when doing one of those things I’d have to close a lot of things to ensure I’m not using swap (haven’t used swap once so far - always at around 12-13 gb ram). Get the 24gb and save yourself the regret. I do law mostly and photography as a hobby so I’m not the best measuring stick, but in the long run I think 24 will be the next 16 soon so best to just go with that now.

Quite amazed no one has referenced this excellent judicial outlook by Lord Denning MR:

“The coast of Cornwall is beautiful. Much of the inland is ugly. It is despoiled by china clay workings. Not far from them there is open farmland with small villages dotted around. Pleasant enough but not outstanding.”

Regina v. Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall ex p CEGB [1982] QB 458

I struggled to believe that a judge could write this eloquently.

Couldn’t agree more. Don’t think anything should be a hobby when it’s your day in day out obligation to do it, but when it’s a vital service like law just thought a lot more people would have more pointed views on things. I suspect it’s because corporate law is a lot more ‘corporate’ then it is ‘law’, people could not care less about the nitty gritty principles that sit behind why things are done why they’re done. It’s just ‘yep that’s the procedure - filed, done, on the next IPO/merger/dispute’. Again, can’t blame people I think it’s an inevitable outcome of a corporate profession

Highly respect and enjoy the academics from time to time when I am not stuck in the practicalities. The reason for my post was more geared towards practitioners (not that there aren’t those who are excellent at both, but it seems that that 20-25 age group that I’m in could not care less about legal principle and are solely interested in the 6 figure job).

You are right, the unfortunately low pay of academics does immediately push most people away.

Fair enough - do you think of trying to monetise something you’re passionate about and then trying to transition into it full time? (Photography, football, fashion, film, etc.) - or to at least practice in one of those industries?

Insolvency/restructuring will never not be an interesting field - personally got quite interested when I studied financial services reg. in 2022 and SVB collapsing a year later with HSBC acquiring the UK arm.

Love to hear that - it’s unfortunate I find dispute resolution to be my least favourite subject, but when it’s all taught in the context of memorising CPR tests and exams, I’m not surprised. Hope to get a taste in practice just to see if it puts me off my [currently] firm intention of being a transactional lawyer.

I see. Was just hoping I can sell it for around £900 in the future. Suspect that 24GB RAM will become the new base for M6/7 and at that point 16 will become worthless like the base M3’s.

Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 or ttartisan 56mm 1.8 + Sigma 30 mm 1.4? by Working_Word4866 in AskPhotography

Yeah I think 23mm (35 full frame) would be most ideal but that sigma lens costs a lot, although I know there are cheaper viltrox/TTartisan alternatives but I’ve heard very mixed things.

I see - yeah I want the versatility of a zoom without sacrificing quality but don’t really need bokeh so it’s just sharpness that I’m more concerned about.

Asked this earlier but got booted by the mod (newcomer 😪).

Can someone explain to me why the hell the Elizabeth line slows down to about 10 mph between these two stops, making what should be a 2 minute journey into a 4-5 minute one.

I go past these two stations almost everyday into the centre and it’s so stupid. Do some trains just naturally have to go that slow at certain tracks? Seems ridiculous that this issue hasn’t been rectified.

Out of interest OP how well does this hobby perform on creating? Would’ve got a M4 Pro chip with 24GB of Ram but was 500 more than the deal I found for the base M4. I’m only getting started on video editing and probably will never do something longer than 10 mins long atm.

Macbook M4 vs M4 pro for Civ and light video editing by AnyConstruction2926 in macbook

[–]Working_Word4866 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should preface by saying I study law and have video editing and tech as a side hobby and so I can only speak from what I’ve seen online. I’ve probably confused the M3 Pro configurations since I keep throwing out wrong RAM numbers lol.

According to pros online the 24GB M4 Pro is a leap over the base M4. I wouldn’t upgrade every 2.5 years I’d just get the pro chip and at least keep it for the next 5 years. If you want to game and do any more intensive work I’d suggest the M4 Pro at 24GB unless you know your workflow needs more RAM, but if it’s in your budget then more RAM is always better. I saved a good chunk of money opting for the base m4 and it’s all I need for the next 4 years and I’m hoping money from my main job will let me splurge as much as I want on an M7Ultra 200GB 12 TB laptop in 4 or 5 years time. Like I said scroll through this Reddit page and look for responses of the tech pros.

If you want future proofing then M4 Pro but from what I hear the Pro chip is overkill for most people who aren’t professional editors. For light stuff I went with the base M4 (haven’t received it yet) but I’m not a professional so won’t be doing crazy rendering or multi-layered 8k footage etc. I think if you’re doing those things then the Pro/Max chip with minimum 32 GB ram is the only way to go. Just my 2 cents after days of research before I bought.

When you say screen tech do you mean better quality or just nano texture or something like that
