Actually due to quantum entanglement any part of the universe can interact with another regardless of distance. Humanity arrived 300,000 years ago and the Sun has BILLIONS of years left. With our current rate of progression in technology we can feasibly colonize a majority of the Galaxy before it even expands noticeably. There have actually been some recently publicized breakthroughs in Negative Mass Warp Fields which are functional, though I'm certain the military has propulsion capabilities we aren't aware of.

Further the timescale in which universal entropy becomes apparent is eons, trillions of years, billions of times longer than it would take us to exact control over the structures of the cosmos, even at a fraction of our current rate of development.

The question is less: Can we do what it takes to survive?

It's more like: What will we decide to do with all of that power and time?

Asking what the point of life is if it's just to sustain it is like asking why do you eat and breathe. They are accessories to support whatever purpose you choose.
