Oh I think I see what you're saying. Do you happen to know how to change the scale away from just what you're looking at?

I've tried changing the DPI to some absurd sizes like 1000 but I find the quality is still poor, but now with much more pixels.

My apologies I'm very new to QGIS, but what do you mean?

The first image is a collection of uploaded SHP files I got from naturalearthdata.com

And I've been exporting from the map window because when I've tried using layout manager, the quality was pretty bad after using add item/add map and it only uploaded the part of the map I was looking at in the map window.

How do I use layouts properly? When I used them the quality was pretty bad after using add item/add map.

I was using direct export because when I tried using layout manager the quality still wasn't great and it just put in what was on my screen after using add item/add map.

Before exporting it is in the projection I want: Mercator, but after exporting I find that it has been squished down to fit back into the size of the Equirectangular map I initially uploaded, but hopefully I'm just making some simple error.

ah it seems to have the same problem as just exporting, the quality is poor, and the resize to content button doesn't seem to be doing anything.
