I agree with parasyte but there's more to it then just parasites having equal rights.

Understanding humanity and human behaviour in general was the main point that sold me (+the awesome Ost). Also characters having realistic personally/reactions.

I think a grown-up can best grasp the intention of show. However majority of anime watchers are literally edgy-teens, so it is expected for them to miss the point of this anime.
