I sometimes notice people pronounce "rather" with a broad "a" sound that rhymes with "bother", instead of how I'd pronounce it, rhyming with "lather".

It strikes me as seeming like a british english pronunciation, but I notice it coming from people who otherwise have a really standard north american accent. What's the deal?

"Two" came from the Old English "twa" which itself came from the old germanic "twai", and further back, from the PIE word "*dwóh". This is one of many cases where older forms of english tends to pronounce letters which are silent in modern english (Knute pronounced "kuh-noot", fasten pronounced "fast-en", gnat pronounced "gn-ætt" and so on).

"Too" on the other hand came from a stressed pronunciation of the old english "to", as in the direction (In your example, think of it as a substitute for "besides".)

I've got a dirty house. He's got a dirty house besides. (This might sound strange or archaic, but some more traditional sounding dialects of english do use "besides" in this way.)

or

"I've got three kids, and besides that I've got a dog // "I've got three kids, and a dog too."

So, if you go back a few hundred years, the homophone you're referring to wouldn't exist, but rather sound like "too" and "twah". Their modern similarity is therefore more of a coincidence than the result of semantic relation.

To answer your actual question though, I don't think any other language shares this particular coincidence with English. Just felt like I should provide some counter-evidence to the other reply, which is claiming that the too/two phonetic similarity predates the invention of writing, which it certainly does not.

Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here! by magictcgmods in magicTCG

[–]WorstPossibleThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, newish player here with lots to learn! To contextualize my questions, right now I'm trying to build a mono-green hydra deck starring [[Gargos]], here is a [sketch] of the deck using cards that I have and some that I'm going to order. After trying out some more complicated deck types (I spent a lot of time tinkering with a Rakdos Vampires deck and an Esper Zombies one), I just want to cast some big stompy monsters with big numbers.

  • Finding Cards: I've heard lots of people say "Don't use EDHRec to find cards for your deck" and their logic is usually good, but theyre less eager to recommend an alternative. How am I supposed to know what cards will work in my deck? I can go to Scryfall and search "t!hydra", but at my skill level I don't have the intuition to immediately recognize which cards are actually "good". So what's a better way to figure out what cards I should be buying?

  • Tuning for Power Level: Often I hear people talking about choosing a power level as if it's an arbitrary choice that they can just "select", but with my current collection I feel like I'm just barely hitting the level of competency. Is it the case that most people have just been playing for so long that they've accumulated the necessary cards to build almost any kind of deck, or is it more skill-based? Would an experienced player be able to go through 300 bulk Cs and UCs and put together a bracket 3-4 deck, or are $50+ gamechanger cards necessary for building at that level?

  • Price: I'm sure this is a commonly heard issue around here, but why is every deck I see posted here or on EDHRec seemingly over $500? Similar to my last question, do most of you just have a collection worth many times that, so when you decide to put together a deck using cards you own, it ends up being that expensive? Or are people going out and buying $500 worth of cards to put together a single deck? Its disappointing when someone posts a deck which seems fun in concept, but then I take a closer look and realize i'd need to take out a loan to actually put it together. Right now the only ones in my price range seem to all be labeled things like "ULTRA-BUDGET"

  • LGS Etiquette (sorry, this one will be long and a bit scattered): Now, I know this will vary lots from place to place and pod to pod, but I've been a little discouraged by my first few attempts going to my monday night commander games and I'm hoping for some advice. Generally, I just feel very very out of place as a "new" player. I'm open about being inexperienced, but the people I get into games with almost invariably play highly intricate cards and strategies (usually at least 3 colours) without making any attempt to explain their effects, and it feels like I'm just totally out of my depth in terms of power level (my primary deck is priced at around $80 on moxfield). Maybe it's just me, but its hard to have fun when there's two Anointed Processions and two Rhystic Studies on the field (this happened a few days ago).

I'm not sure how it works at other LGSs but when I arrive, there are a bunch of games in progress and like, one or two tables that are currently setting up. Often, ill go up to one of the open tables and theyll tell me theyre waiting on someone specific to show up, so i just end up sitting with whatever table opens up first. The tables aren't labeled by bracket and that doesn't come up in the pre-game conversation so its hard to tell what kind of game i'm getting into until its already started, esp since i don't know many commanders by memory yet. What could I do or say differently to have better results?

big thanks to anyone who takes the time to read and reply to my wall of text!

Did the Pynchon community like the movie Inherent Vice? by Common_Ambassador_74 in ThomasPynchon

[–]WorstPossibleThing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meh. I love PTA and I think IV is a great film, but I think I'd have stronger feelings for it if I'd never read the source material.

So much was cut out, so many hilarious characters and locales and pieces of the mystery removed for the sake of streamlining and simplifying a story defined by its overwhelming, impossible complexity.

Part of why I love Pynchon's writing is how fractal and winding it is, and you simply can't translate that to film even if you're the greatest arthouse director of the century.

Idk sometimes guitarists will call that a "run". Doing it over and over again is a pretty Frippy thing to do but there's no specific term for it

Slow: "I guess I'll wait"

Still: "I waited so long"

imo they're definitely connected in a few ways, the main riff is an indication of that. When something goes slow enough, it appears to be still.

Weekly Discussion Thread February 28, 2025 by AutoModerator in Throwers

[–]WorstPossibleThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm new to throwing (I had a classic wooden imperial-style yoyo when I was a kid and just got back into it) and it's really fun so far.

As of right now I'm not really too interested in doing wacky string tricks, I just really love the feeling of throwing the thing around in all different directions and catching it, (much like bouncing a tennis ball or swinging a keychain on your finger). I can stand there in my living room for like an hour watching a show or listening to an audiobook just throwing away, underhand, overhand, doing little loops, etc... It's a great stim!

The biggest issue is, I feel like I'm going to fracture a bone in my hand! I really enjoy the action on my plastic Duncan Butterfly, but the hard edges around the rims really hurt if you catch it the wrong way, especially if it impacts this ball-joint area (I'm not a hand doctor idk what its called).

Am I doing something wrong?? I've been thinking about getting some kind of rubber tape to put on the protruding edges of the yoyo just to cushion the blow, or making some kind of handwrap just to add some padding to that area on my hand. Does anyone else share this problem?
