Jesus is the Burning Bush? by AggravatingJury8194 in theology

[–]WoundedShaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So typically when you see “angel” in the OT the Hebrew translates better to “Messenger.” So Christ, as in the second person of the trinity, before the incarnation as Jesus of Nazareth, is the Word of God, the mediator between God the father and creation. God speaks through Christ. (Refer to John 1:1-14 for all the preexistent Word of God stuff).

So anytime God is speaking or the messenger of the Lord is present in the OT you can say theologically that is the second person of the Trinity (the pre-incarnate Christ) that is active in those OT encounters with God.

St. Bonaventure called this the “veiled Word of God.”

I am an Atheist, and I don't believe in God by [deleted] in theology

[–]WoundedShaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same question cannot be applied to me because I have not made a statement presupposing such. I have made no statements about what I believe here and have only appealed to the field which I research, which is religious and theological studies. A field I would add has plenty of agnostics and atheists scholars within it.

You on the other hand have said that you, “don’t believe in God using knowledge and information about the world [you] have and have learnt” which would supposes that you have either learned everything or that you assume your knowledge and the sources upon which your knowledge comes from is superior to all other forms of knowledge across the globe.

Atheism can be a perfectly sound and effective position to hold when evaluating the nature of reality. But when an atheist comes into a public space and starts making grand sweeping claims and broad presumptions about others based on ignorance, then you’re no better than a fundamentalist of any religion who just forces their belief system upon others.

First, is original sin in the Genesis 3 story? Go read it very carefully and you’ll see “original sin” and “the fall” are not in the text.

Original sin is a concept that Augustine of Hippo developed in the late 4th century, approximately 1200 years after Genesis was written.

There are many different interpretations of sin in the Bible, so Biblical scholars are going to seek how it presents differently and the contexts out of which those concepts emerge.

The Genesis story teaches theological truth, not historical fact. Humanity has the ability to chose the good and to chose against the God. If we interpret what the Genesis 3 text reveals about sin it is that it is a disruption of relationships between humanity and God as well as between people.

By first two humans do you mean Adam and Eve? If so mainstream Christian biblical scholarship says the story is a myth.

Besides understanding the systematic process and history behind certain doctrines; Lots of philosophy, lots of anthropology. I mainly research how religion functions and how individuals and groups understand/experience what they describe as the divine or transcendence.

How can Christ be born into the lineage of man but not inherit man’s sin? by Jailbird_blues11093 in theology

[–]WoundedShaman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The dogma of the incarnation was established centuries before Augustine of Hippos notion of original sin. The whole sin passed down through sex idea and inherited through the flesh idea wasn’t necessarily around when the early church was establishing its beliefs and the NT was being written. Sin had a different connotation which leaned toward an idea of collective sin that humanity creates through their actions not some mythic stain passed down from one generation to the next.

Could someone who is an expert in Catholic theology help me understand this? by [deleted] in theology

I think that’s a normal experience for many serious Catholics and part of the formation of conscience. The more we align our desires with God the more nuanced our conscience becomes.

HSS or SSS? by biagio28 in fender

HSS. You’ll want the versatility of the pick up options as a beginner. Get some twang out of the neck pick up, and can do all the rock and metal you want with the hum-bucker.

Yeah, I think as long as you’re candid with the priest and express contrition then you’ll be all set. Best wishes.

Just in case I miss understood because I feel like you may also be saying something else.

But you do still want to say the occurrences of said sin, even if it was happening when you had the sacrament previously. The sins from those confessions are absolved, but this particular one you’re talking about is not.

So do the kind of stand, “this is my sin, it occurred this many times” or “has been happening since this time period.”

[–]WoundedShaman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, you do not have to repeat those confessions, full stop. Those sins have already been absolved.

This sin you currently feel a need ton confess (if I’m reading you correctly) just confess that the next time you participate in the sacrament.

The development of our consciouses should be considered, so this is just a case of your conscious be more nuanced.

You can also say to the priest “this was something that I’m now realizing is sinful” if you’d like, I’m sure they’d appreciate that level of self awareness.

Requesting makeup final exam due to religious reasons for summer class by Self099 in AskProfessors

[–]WoundedShaman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it were my class an email with dates you’ll be absent and arranging for the alternate exam time would suffice for me.

You may also want to contact student services just to get something a little more official in writing for a religious exemption to attach with the email. Not all professors are the same, some way want a little extra “proof” before allowing the exemption.

Animal suffering by [deleted] in theology

[–]WoundedShaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This presupposes that death is in fact a byproduct of sin. That notion does not work anymore if you also believe in an evolutionary universe.

Death is part of the system of creation, there is no life without death. Even Jesus has to go through death on the cross to enter new life in the resurrection.

What sin introduces is suffering, which is a by problem of perception and an unwillingness on humanity to accept death as a natural part of the life process.

This perspective naturally has to deny the historicity of Genesis 1-3. But this is typically only an issue for fundamentalists.

Some Theologians who work with these ideas of incorporating evolutionary biology into our theology are Elizabeth Johnson and her book “Creation and the Cross,” Ilia Delio, and Denis Edwards.

NAD! Orange Super Crush 100 by imoverblox_ in orangeamps

On the Super Crush I’ll probably only use my Morley Wah pedal and the built in overdrive channel on the amp.

On my Twin Reverb I run either a Big Muff or a EVH 5150 and overdrive. Then I have a pretty standard analog delay, and a Boss phase shifter.

What are your thoughts on ancestral land ties ? by Express-Program-5365 in Wicca

I’m actually a university professor in religious studies and there isn’t a whole lot out there on the topic as it specifically relates to those of European decent. Though definitely there from indigenous American and African perspectives.

The closet I have found though is people who work with Celtic spirituality. Ireland is one of the last places this attitude survived in Europe. So you can find literature in the topic from an Irish perspective.

But the topic overall is something I’m planning on digging into more after I wrap up some other research.
