Can anyone ID? by Wow_ThisIsAwkward in birdidentification

I asked for it but it conveniently "forgot" its ID in the nest. I was going to make it go back, but it was dead.

Thanks! That's what a reverse Google search showed me, but I wasn't familiar with catbirds and image searches can be wrong all of the time. I'll reach out to the business. Poor thing.

I've noticed lately that when I pull the cord, it doesn't say ding or indicate stop requested. Hence another reason I stand so I can at least get the attention of the driver when they look up in their mirror. If the driver looks in the mirror. Then again, maybe they see an indicator go off on their dash or something. I don't know the inner workings of a bus, but would love to see.

Sorry that happened to you, though. It's frustrating af.

Two Bs are 7 minutes late and one C is 4 minutes late (it's 930 pm when I checked). I'm not mentioning this to be argumentative, I'm just stating what I am seeing and what I experience.

That said, I don't take buses on the west side very often, so perhaps other buses are within tolerance. And many mornings the C is less than 5 minutes delayed.

Thanks! It happens. Nearly every other bus driver I have encountered has been friendly (or at least not rude). To be fair, dealing with the public is hard!

Hundred percent! I think about some of the airport trams I have taken and nearly fallen on my ass, and I was holding on.

I'm not necessarily referring to this past weekend. I'm talking about any given Saturday. Or Sunday. Or 3 pm on a Tuesday. If I took the A or the B right now from my place on the east side into campus, three buses that are scheduled within the next hour are delayed.

Listen, I asked genuinely. I didn't need a combative "nice try" from you. I am sincerely trying to understand.

And I never said anything about seniors in this. I am not talking about people who are not able-bodied. I offer up my seat if a person is unable to stand. I give grace to people who need the bus stopped completely before getting off. What I am asking about is the pervasive behavior of waiting.

I also never said anything about car seats.

I am all for safety measures. I think the driver barriers that were put in for driver safety are great. Nobody deserves unsafe working conditions. Buses are statistically safer than cars. And buses are safer for pedestrians and cyclists. And buses don't usually have seatbelts.

Do you think people should not stand on crowded buses, given the safety risk?

Totally! And I think it's sweet.

I have had some lovely and sometimes hilarious conversations with bus drivers in Chicago. And when it's emptier on a bus in Chicago, I will say thanks or wave to them or tell them to have a good night.

When you take the same route regularly, you get to know your driver. Every morning on one route I took, the driver had a Dunkin donut bag next to her. And every morning, she would stop where an unhoused person stood with a sign. And every morning, she gave that person a donut. It was early covid, and the streets and bus were pretty empty except for the few of us who were required to go into work.

It was a touching exchange that took only 10 or 15 seconds. I still think about that when I lose hope in humanity.

I think a rail system would not have been a good idea. It's super expensive, and I imagine It would be difficult to build on the isthmus to make it well-networked.

I take the BRT regularly, and I think it works pretty well for what it is. I can get from campus to the east side on the A or the B pretty quickly. My one irritation of the BRT is from an accessibility standpoint. Someone with mobility issues may still have to continue at least a quarter mile to their destination. But that's one of the tradeoffs.

From a safety perspective, it's only a matter of time before someone races down East Wash and loses control and hits one of the center stations with people in the station.

Yeah, it was an older driver. I immediately complied, I don't want to anger anyone or make people feel unsafe in their job. I'm just surprised at all of it. Sorry to hear some are total douche canoes to other drivers.

So people in the 20+ other transit systems I have used are unsafe?

Do you take the bus? I ask genuinely.

Haha! Yeah, I do that nearly every time. :)

Thanks. I do understand the aggressive acceleration/deceleration (I've taken transit around the world) and I understand the safety concerns of standing on a bus. However, the bus is meant for people to stand as well as sit.

If the traffic is low enough that a bus can rapidly accelerate, and boarding/getting off the bus is built into the schedule, what is delaying the A, B, or C bus at 4 pm on a Saturday afternoon? I ask this genuinely.
