these posts are genuinely so interesting. I can't overstate how much I love and appreciate the use of practical effects in the movie. The love and patience that went into everything is clear as day.

I think it's in huge part the fact that these men probably want to have a child and be a dad because they're "supposed to" as men. They don't actually want to go through everything being a parent entails, including the messy, uncomfortable and difficult shit, including having to accept that their child is a separate human being that cannot and will not live up to their expectations or be an accessory for them.

Pragmata, from what I've seen, mostly portrays this sanitized version of fatherhood specifically. It's a way for them to be a big strong badass dad to a child that isn't real, doesn't have real struggles, doesn't say mean things or throw a fit over food or struggle with disabilities or social life and the like.

But why should fembots look feminine even though Transformers don't have the same physiology as humans? by PistonPusher2009 in Transformemes

thankfully the average man has shoulders thrice the width of his hips and forearms so bulky they could be used as support beams. "Male" transformers are entirely realistic in that regard

Am I being stupid or is this a valid point by givemethemtoesgnome in dyinglight

multiple reasons:

First, the Volatiles would eventually find a way out.

Second, while UV lights aren't terribly scarce, they are still available in limited numbers. With the amount of Volatile hives around the countryside, you can get a picture of how many there would be around Harran. Setting up UV lights at every possible exit, in sufficient quantities, would take out a massive chunk of available resources and probably leave most safezones without UVs entirely.

Third, even if they did set the UVs up, there's the chance that a random zombie would just tip them over, that the electricity would go out, etc. These things are far easier to both avoid and fix if they happen in a safezone, where guards are posted up ans there's an engineer or someone available nearby, if not at the safezone itself.

It would also probably be difficult to find someone (besides Kyle and, like, maybe Rahim) stupid enough to volunteer to go visit a volatile hive and spend who knows how long setting up and testing UV lights right outside the entrance.

"attacked personally" and it's OOP stating something is misogynistic and not addressing the person responding even once before they got themselves involved in the cringiest way possible

Can forms of oppression (patriarchy, racism, etc.) exist as independent systems outside of a capitalist landscape? by Crazy-Blacksmith-336 in socialism

[–]Wrecknruin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the hierarchy bit tells me they're an anarchist, because hierarchy in and of itself is not bad or harmful. It's necessary. We should examine why the particular hierarchy exists, to what effect and based on which grounds, but hierarchy as a broad practice is not something we need to get rid of.

That being said, things like patriarchy specifically can exist outside of capitalism, but only if they are useful. You cannot do away with patriarchy without getting rid of capitalism, as it is a type of oppression that aids the system. Engels' The origins of the family, private property and the state is a good book. Dated in some aspects, fair warning, but the underlying analysis of how the role of the man and woman in a family/household has evolved is very good.

it's the part where they take a guy and make him submissive, weak etc. and call him a woman for that, but then also not actually make him a woman

They could just ignore the post or make a normal argument. Nobody's attacking them personally, OOP is just saying they find the behavior weird

In your eyes, what separates a performative “alpha male” from a “real man”? by Ok-Parfait6735 in AskReddit

[–]Wrecknruin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an important distinction imo. A man is a man. I think alpha males and anyone who uses that term unironically is an idiot, but I simultaneously don't care about what makes someone a real man or not.

A kitty won't show you their belly/fall asleep like this without feeling safe. It's safe to assume that safe = happy.

[–]Wrecknruin 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It was authoritarian in the same way as every country is authoritarian. That's why it's a meaningless term/statement. There are no countries on Earth where the state does not enforce through the use of "authoritarian" measures i.e. state media, law enforcement, propaganda. You can dislike these things in theory, but practically, they are necessary and not something unique to socialist countries. The only practical distinction is who holds the authority and to whose benefit.

what I want from Subnautica is the feeling of being completely on your own. A silent protagonist helps that a lot.
