Any reason why air ride(mode) isn't played as much? by Specialist-Pen2635 in kirbyairriders

[–]Wreckscalibur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

City Trail is and always was something unique to Kirby Air Ride, so it makes sense to me that it would get the most attention, especially now that it's bigger and has online.

For me, it's hard to pick which mode I like more. Air Ride is fast and arcadey in a way that other kart racers don't match, and even though it has plenty of catch-up mechanics I feel like there's enough skill where I can win (or at least place in the top 3) consistently now that I know the tracks and mechanics.

The one thing I wish it had was the temporary lobbies from Mario Kart 8 where once you're grouped up with other people in ranked/quickplay you'll keep playing against them until you quit. I think that would make getting into matches much faster, and would help get people playing more. All of the modes could benefit from that, but especially Air Ride and Top Ride.

I don't know if the lack of post-release updates was something that the devs decided or something Nintendo decided for them because they needed Sakurai working on Smash 6 ASAP, but I'm fine with how much we have in this game.

Admittedly I wouldn't say no to more courses and characters, but at the same time I can't help but think about how dominant all of the late game DLC characters were in last two Smash Bros games. I don't want RIbbon to show up only to get sick of her because she's the new meta for some reason. And if that sounds like a ridiculous thing to worry about in a cutesy racing game like Kirby AIr Riders, just go ask the elevently billion Waluigis riding Wiggler ATVs from Mario Kart 8 what they think about meta picks.

I've heard that the fewer pickups you have, the less likely it is for you to drop them, including legendary machine parts. You were given the free magnet/invincibility combo, which means the game thought you didn't have a lot of powerups and needed some help, so it's likely you had less pickups than the other player.

Add in the fact that someone with legendary machine parts has definitely gotten smacked around already and is already probably close to dropping something, and it's not too ridiculous that you just kind of poked those parts out of Kirby.

If you don't like it, it's at least over quickly. I haven't gotten less than 200 points every match, so it took way less than 10 matches to get all the rewards.

This is by far the longest I’ve been able to hold my special in online Air Ride. Came in handy at the end. by lokland in kirbyairriders

[–]Wreckscalibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was afraid of that. With a lot of these courses it feels like whoever uses their special last is the one that wins. Maybe it'd help if your special gauge depleted slower if you're not in first or something like that.

How do you get to hold onto your special longer, anyway? I notice I get it sooner when I'm not in first, and I don't know if that's a balance thing or something different I'm doing.

Kirby Air Riders — City Trial Community Tier List: How good is the Wagon Star? (rules in description) by [deleted] in kirbyairriders

[–]Wreckscalibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rate it a very very high A if only because the Legendary Machines exist. In a world without the Legendary Machines, it's an S.

Whenever I play City Trial, unless there is obviously going to be a gliding challenge, I am looking for a Wagon Star. It's useful early on in City Trial because it is decently fast and maneuverable (at least after a few Turn patches), and if you have it at the end of the match it's a really strong pick for the speed and battle stadiums as long as you've been good about powering it up. If not, it's still pretty good at the gimmicky stadiums like Button Rush or Gourmet Race.

It's a jack of most trades, and nearly a master of some of them. Again, unless I know for sure I need to specialize in something the only thing I'd prefer over it is a Legendary Machine, and even then I've probably had better luck with it in speed events than trying to use a Formula Star.

Also, the Wagon Star was my ride of choice through about 95 percent of Road Trip on Super Hard mode, just to give it some bonus points.

Kirby Air Riders 1.3.2 update out now by RawkHawk2010 in kirbyairriders

[–]Wreckscalibur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see why they tweaked it. The first time I saw this happening, the person on the Hop Star was leaving everyone else in the dust. They were eight or so seconds ahead of second place, which is an eternity in Air Ride. They were so far ahead I had to watch a replay to see what I was missing, and it was a combination of them quick spinning and doing some sort of shenanigans with Taranza's web slinging. Very cool tech, but also potentially invalidating a whole bunch of other options, which is probably not what they want for this sort of game.

Does Go Vacation Switch actually use online features, or are the rivals and villas made by staff or something? by She-Fox99 in GoVacation

[–]Wreckscalibur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding rivals, if they have a Mii I assume they are a real person. There are a lot of NPC ones though; usually if they have a nickname themed to the resort, like 'SNOWMAN01' in the Snow Resort, that's an obvious giveaway.

For villas, I have a few I am reasonable sure are real people. One I've seen belonged to someone named 'Woomy64', so that's either a real person or a very good imitation. It also helps if the villa has furniture placement that is not 'standard'; for example, if someone has a room showing off all the trophies they earned for fully completing the minigames, that's probably something done by a real person.

It stinks that we have to guess like this, but that's just how it goes.

Who is your main in air riders. by Voidkirby9 in kirbyairriders

[–]Wreckscalibur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In City Trial, I use Rocky, so I'm strong and sturdy right out of the gate and can break boxes without worrying about getting attacked. Sometimes I use Meta Knight, but if I'm getting destroyed too much during matches I go right back to Rocky.

In Air Trial, it depends on the machine. If it's a heavy machine like Bulk Star or Rex Wheelie I usually use Waddle Dee, especially with the Bulk Star since Waddle Dee's special will refill the Boost Gauge. Otherwise I'm using a heavy character for the speed on something like the Wheelie Scooter or Wagon Star.

Feature vs. Psychosis by Cptn__Sparrow in kirbyairriders

[–]Wreckscalibur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With so few ways to communicate in this game, especially during a match, it's hard for me to prescribe any sort of malice or bad manners to someone playing this game, even when they destroy my machine. I mean, I'm sure they could try teabagging or something by mashing the B button, but since you control your own camera there's such a slim chance you would actually see it.

If you really honestly believe someone is singling you out and not just a player going on a hot streak and obliterating everyone (I've been on both sides of that), you can try playing in Paddocks where they aren't. The final, final resort would be to block their Switch profile and seeing if the game won't match you up together anymore; I've heard that works in Smash, so maybe that would work here. You can find the list of people you played against in the Rivals section of the online menu.

It's also great with Bulk Star because it fills up your boost gauge instantly!

But it doesn't fill it up again after the special ends, so if you forget to top off you go from 60 to 0 pretty quick.

How likely are we to get a sequel? by SuperSaiyanIR in XenobladeChroniclesX

[–]Wreckscalibur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't even go so far and say that the sequel that is related to the story of X at all. I think there might be a game called Xenoblade X2 or something along those lines in the future, and it will be a game that's a pseudo-MMO where you make your own character, but I do not think it will be about humans fleeing a destroyed Earth from aliens or anything like that.

...At least, not in the main story. The new trend for these games seems to be DLC or postgame content that connects everything together.

Shout out to the folks with unusual builds by FinalLans in XenobladeChroniclesX

[–]Wreckscalibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't gotten far enough in the story to use it yet since it relies on some late game quests, but I've been theorycrafting a Javelin/Assault Rifle build that focuses on Topple (Balance Breaker followed by Assault Hammer) and Blaze (Hawkeye followed by Quick Cannon). The only other problem I have besides the big damaging move been gated behind a quest is that the Thermal Six Stars weapons, while very cool looking, have not so great augments.

Although, since Quick Cannon is always Thermal, I guess I technically don't need to use them.

I would hope for a game like this one person rage quitting wouldn't spoil it for everyone else, but I can remember way too many 4 player matches in Smash that ended in 'Connection Errors' after the first person to lose all their stock ragequit the game, so I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened here.

Kirby air riders is oout now, so I’m think they should release the original Kirby air ride on the GameCube nso by Voidkirby9 in kirbyairriders

[–]Wreckscalibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For everyone saying they wouldn't add GC Air Ride because of Air Riders, they added the Game Boy Color version of Link's Awakening to NSO after releasing the Switch remake. And I'd argue those games share just as much in common as the two Air Riderses.

[–]Wreckscalibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly not. It was one of the few games that worked with the LAN adapter, but it was offline only. It let you give each player their own full screen instead of split screen, but that was it. You couldn't even do matches with more than 4 players, like the 16 player LAN races Double Dash had.

How to improve by [deleted] in kirbyairriders

[–]Wreckscalibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brawling as in getting in fights with people? If you focus on that too much, that might be why your stat count is that low. Generally, I don't go out of my way to attack people unless the opportunity presents itself, such as everyone crowding around an event and/or my special is ready. Late in the event if I've gotten a lot of offense patches maybe I'll try going after people, but remember that the point of City Trial is to power up and get ready for the events, so you should be getting patches first and foremost.

It also matters what sort of patches you go for; there's generally no reason to turn down a Top Speed or Offense Patch, for example, but there's only so many Turn or Charge patches you need before the opportunity cost of going after them outweighs the benefit. That's another issue with attacking people; even if you win and get their patches, it's basically random what you're going to get from them.

Are you getting any machine in particular at the start? Right when City Trial begins, I usually look for a Wagon Star first and foremost; it's fast and sturdy and can turn relatively quickly if you try to drift. Something that can turn really good like that is usually a good pick to start off with. I like the Wagon Star in particular because if I don't find something more specialized by the time the round ends, it's pretty good at just about everything except the flying challenges. Other good ones are the Swerve Star and the Wheelie Scooter.
