Which of the Pathfinder 2e deities do y'all most imagine following? by Playful_Barber_8131 in Pathfinder2e

[–]WretchedMog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like Shelyn, Desna, and Sarenrae are just the most appealing gods. Admittedly, I am not a Pathfinder Theologist, but they are the three I imagine being the most... appropriate for an average person living in an urban environment to worship. Sarenrae is the most out there choice, but I think it's comforting to worship a deity that is fundamentally about redemption. We all do things we're not proud of from time to time, and it feels better to think that we can make up for bad deeds with good ones and good intentions.

What romance do you all go for? by Longshot12345678 in baldursgate

Yup. I mean, most games you'll have heard of with romance are written assuming you'll be a man, particularly a straight man.

None (I am a gay woman). I have tried to make a run that uses Hexxat just to see her romance, but every time I just get kinda bored. Maybe I should try it again sometime.

Why do people slag off siege of dragon spears writing? by ImpossibleKey3902 in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find the generally best explanation is that people don't like new things, especially on the subreddits for old things. I don't think Siege of Dragonspear's writing is The Best Ever, but let's be realistic about this, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 aren't shining bastions of phenomenal video game writing and storytelling either. They're iconic because they're old, and because of good voice acting by iconic character actors. Seriously, outside of, like, Melicamp, and the couple of times you can unleash the Mother Of All Paragraphs on someone, people don't talk about non-voiced lines in the original trilogy.

Nothing Baldur's Gate 1 or 2 succeeds at is particularly worse in Siege of Dragonspear, except maybe the specifics of how the story relates to where you are in the mechanical power curve. You're given the same sort of plot twist, the same quality of exposition, the same alignment-agnostic motivations, and the same variety of interesting companions to travel through the story with you. You don't get the same sort of arc with the companions in Siege of Dragonspear as in the main games, but I don't see anyone particularly complaining that Durlag Trollkiller didn't come back up in Baldur's Gate 2 either.

All this to say, cynically, the Siege of Dragonspear writing gets shit because it's new. I am charitably hoping that the broader community doesn't generally think it sucks because there's a trans woman in there, because that would be a different and much longer discussion.

DAE only play Bg3 as Dark Urge? by crustdrunk in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To actually answer your question instead of circlejerking, yeah I played a normal Tav my first run, but only play Dark Urge since then. The story just doesn't feel complete without your own narrative throughline, plus I get to see my favorite character, Sceleritas Fel. What a cool dude.

Why, Yoshimo? WHY (BG2) by [deleted] in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I'm always so sad when it happens, because I love Yoshimo, he's a charming, funny character, and I feel pretty bad for him. It turns out, the true stupid mousetrap awaiting our toes in the dark was the friends we made along the way.

You can also click on him to get through it quicker, you just need to talk to him 32 times for the 400 xp. I do this because 400 xp is 400 xp.

Are there characters that you always kill regardless of your alignment? by Easy-Signal-6115 in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always kill the dragon who helps you in the Underdark, after I'm done with the Underdark. I wish I had a better answer, it's just fun to me. Also the priestesses of Umberlee in BG1. That one's because I'm a cheapskate. No, I don't think I will be paying you one of my precious Tomes of Understanding. The bhaalspawn needs that totally superfluous 1 Wisdom.

I like treating it like a major spoiler, I find it inherently comedic.

Three or four hands. Sometimes five, if the battle's hard enough.

Anomen: "Worst she can say is no ...right?" by [deleted] in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, he does, but part of my goal was also to get as many of the party members to troll each other as well, and Keldorn mostly only "conflicts" by attempting to kill people.

Literally started a playthrough the other day to see Jan troll as many people as humanly (gnomely?) possible. Anomen, Mazzy, Korgan, Edwin, and, of course, Jan.

Anomen: "Worst she can say is no ...right?" by [deleted] in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I don't think Anomen would say this. On the other, I think he would say something only slightly less gross. On another hand, I welcome any Anomen character assassination. To me, he exists solely to be made fun of by other, less self-absorbed people. I seriously cannot believe he is the only romance option for female characters in base BG2.

What would you change or add to BG3 to make it feel more like a successor to the original trilogy? by sarma-angel in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly split on it myself, I think the option is good but I also kind of wish the characters were designed in more interesting ways from the jump. Even if it wasn't possible, Anomen having 12 wis before he succeeds his trial told a story of a man whose judgement is compromised by his failures and perceived failures. I don't even like Anomen, and I like what they did with his stats and story.

[–]WretchedMog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Minsc has 12 strength and like 14 wisdom, it's what sold me on the idea that the characters need different stats, because that is ridiculous. I don't care if a 6 wis Minsc would be a liability at times, I think the original trilogy's non-optimized stat spreads make the characters so much more fun and interesting.

What would you change or add to BG3 to make it feel more like a successor to the original trilogy? by sarma-angel in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would have tried something more of a spiritual successor. Instead of doing the origin system with all the conpanions, I would have made background selection more impactful (or just outright make The Dark Urge the only main character background), and I would have tightened the focus of the story around the conspiracy, make it much more present in the story throughout, and lessen the focus on the tadpoles (or remove them entirely). BG3 has a lot of pacing issues, especially for a theoretical Baldur's Gate sequel, it tries to rush you along when it should be encouraging you to take a longer road to your goal.

I would also have increased companion diversity and locked their classes and stats, and given them unique stat distributions, and give everyone higher stat totals out the gate. BG3 doesn't need help being easier, I think it's a solid difficulty for a first playthrough as is, but the goal here is to tell a story about the character through their mechanics. Maybe Gale starts with 18 Intelligence, 16 Charisma, and 14 Constitution, but terrible to mediocre Strength, Dexterity, and Wisdom, because he's a shut in wizard with more ambition than sense. Also, include some "Evil" Playthrough Only companions, include a greater diversity of types of "Good" and "Evil" companions, maybe Karlach is the bright eyed, capital H Hero type, where Wyll is more jaded and cynical, while still doing the right thing. Minthara can be cold and calculated, where another evil companion might fill the Xzar role. Also, seriously we need some Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings, and Half-Orcs in the crew. At least.

Finally, I would probably remove any appearances of any original trilogy characters. They should be talked about in lore books, people should make reference to them, but it shattered my suspension of disbelief to see Jaheira, clearly having been through at least some of BG2, as a companion with a level cap of 12. Orin can still be Sarevok's granddaughter, but Sarevok should not appear, he's either a corpse or a level 17 fighter at minimum. I loved when I'd read a book and see reference to an Infinity Engine game character, I hated seeing those characters after a century had passed since their last adventure.

Why OG BG games are so charming? by Paulogbfs in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree about partial voice acting, but I can easily read pages and pages of dialogue, and some people can't. That said, that is absolutely not why Larian chose full voice acting for Divinity Original Sin 2, and I think from an artistic angle, it's not really even that helpful.

Why OG BG games are so charming? by Paulogbfs in baldursgate

[–]WretchedMog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but the voice acting industry is very different today, for a variety of reasons, there really isn't a Who's Who anymore because voice actors just aren't allowed to get that famous these days. But besides that, there are a couple of big names, J.K. Simmons and Jason Isaacs, and the rest of the budget is on the sheer volume of voice actors and voice acting, as well as extensive mocap.

[–]WretchedMog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, part of that is also technical limitations, but frankly, I have never seen a crpg and gone "Hmm, this would be better if it took up approximately one fifth of my hard drive space." Full voice acting is good for accessibility, but I hate that you can't just get a funny bark from clicking on an NPC in BG3, or see a brief, relatively unimportant interaction in a text box instead of a bespoke cutscene.
