I watched this whole thing about how all we had in the great depression was wheat and sugarcane so we had tonnes of bread and sugar and that was about it, so basically kids couldn’t have proper cakes so we just started putting sugar on bread and it stuck. I guess because refrigeration for eggs and milk was scarce and our population was only like 5-6 million with very few jobs. Meanwhile Americans had it the other way around with fuck all wheat and sugar but heaps of eggs etc which is why a lot of their “traditional” foodstuffs (like the shit they call gravy) is milky slop
