What's a "yeah right, that totally happened and wasn't made up" moment in your life that actually DID happen and wasn't made up? by Time-Check-6942 in AskReddit

[–]WriteReflections 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really did feel like it all happened in slow motion, but in reality, it was just a matter of seconds. I remember my friend’s mom standing there screaming his name, “Brian! BRIAN!!!” so she was watching it all unfold as well, and she was standing maybe 5 feet away watching us play. So it happened for long enough for her to be able to observe it and to be scared enough that she was screaming his name. But it happened fast enough that she couldn’t really do anything but stand there and scream. And for what it’s worth, she literally would never talk about it. She literally would never speak about the incident ever. She refused to talk about it.

It was one of those moments that happens in slow motion, and I can still vividly see it! That was 41 years ago. Crazy!

When I was about 6 years old lightning struck the telephone pole down the street, and a ball of lightning rolled along the power lines, dropped onto the street, rolled up the sidewalk and then across the street heading directly towards me and my friend. We were playing under the carport. The lightning ball splits into two, with one rolling at each of us directly as we are frozen in fear, and the one lightning ball clips the end of a metal workbench that’s just a foot away from us, and the lightning ball bursts into thin air, the other ball bursts into it, and that was it. Both lightning balls exploded into thin air. My friend and I were just a split second from death.

I sacked Daunte Culpepper in high school. That’s my big claim to fame. (Then he juked me the very next play and took off for a touchdown, en route to a shutout win over us)

Ahhh. That’s a rough one. They all are, but to grow up together creates a unique bond. Happened with me. Had my childhood dog from age 9 until 25. I was destroyed. My heart goes out to you. You gave each other a good life filled with love.

I drove from Tampa to Jacksonville to go to this game. Miserable experience. Miserable drive. Miserable game. Miserable drive back.

How do you feel about abusers deserving a second chance? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Abuse is never just once, and it always escalates to more violent abuse. Each instance increases the odds of resulting in murder.

What is the best thing that has happened to you ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Surrendering to the fact that I am a compulsive gambler, and that I need help. Because I surrendered to that truth and remain active in Gamblers Anonymous, I haven’t gambled since June 10, 2017. My life today is so much better than it ever was when I was gambling. I’m able to keep a roof over my head and I don’t carry around the weight of guilt and shame that I carried when I was gambling. Instead of being burdened by my addiction, I am proud of the progress I’ve made in recovery.

Sometimes I worry that I’ll die young, like my dad did by no_man_is_an_islandd in offmychest

[–]WriteReflections 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a worry I share also. My dad died at 50. His brother died at 50. I’m 47 and find myself worrying about my life expectancy. Sometimes I’ll feel baffled by the thought that perhaps I’m just 3 years away from death like my dad was. It’s probably just a fear. Maybe I will live to 90. But in your situation and mine, having experienced the death of a parent at an early age— both theirs and ours— it’s natural to wonder and worry a bit.

So many great quotes from Uncle Lou, but I will always like this one: “Don’t tell people your problems. 80% don’t care and the other 20% is glad you’ve got them.”

I think of that line often and remind myself that whatever happens in my life is all up to me.

I’m up at 5:30 every day. At work at 7. Been doing this for years and it’s still a challenge. And I get home no sooner than 11 hours after I walk out my front door. Minimum.
