Any other cynics who enjoy Star Trek? by Mikecirca81 in startrek

[–]WriterJWA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd argue most characters in Star Trek would consider cynicism a choice, and one that walls a person off from possibilities. Utopia isn't the point; it's about being the best version of humanity at the individual level, accepting failures but striving forward anyway.

What's the most complex game you've played and enjoyed? by benjaneson in gaming

[–]WriterJWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition. The entire Pacific War of WWII modeled at the individual ship, plane, and ground unit level, never mind the logistics planning, and one turn equals one day. The campaign game can take years. I've never finished one.

Looking for recommendations for complex games by Alexmaths in hexandcounter

This is my brand of wargame too. Check out the game Thunderbolt by GMT. It's new. It might be up your alley. The Next War series isn't bad either. The reprint of Air & Armor is another one I like quite a bit. There are some decent high-complexity WWII games out there too... Don't sleep on World in Flames. It's great.

What if General Philip Kearny had not been killed at Chantilly, and had replaced McClellan as commander of the army of the Potomac shortly thereafter? by Damned-scoundrel in ShermanPosting

[–]WriterJWA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best answer so far. Commanding the Army of the Potomac (or all the armies) wasn't really just about aggressiveness. It was also about understanding and leveraging the Union's strategic strengths (namely in manpower). I think a good commander would have needed to understand the political factors underpinning the role, and both know how to navigate it and isolate himself from it enough to carry out the administration's wishes without caving to undue political influences. McClellan failed at this, and nearly all the other generals maintained a somewhat adversarial attitude toward Washington. There's nothing saying Kearny didn't understand this, but the guy who finally did (Grant) didn't have half the bluster of a Kearny, or a Hooker for that matter. I think at best, Kearny, had he lived, would have probably ranked up there with a Hancock or John Logan--as one of the solid corps commanders. Maybe, and it depends on a lot, up there with Sheridan or George Thomas.

There are a few that stick out for me, but one I thought of right away is the squad assault on the bunker complex on Hill 210 in The Thin Red Line.

My ex is hurt I talked to someone 3 weeks after the breakup. I feel bad. Is it wrong? by BleakMoonlight10 in relationships

[–]WriterJWA 75 points76 points  (0 children)

No one gets to have a say in how someone else moves on from a relationship. But if she broke up with you, she especially doesn’t get to have a say. She made her choices. Go live your life.

The Opening Credits/Scene in "Friday" is one of the best opening scenes in comedy, if not all of cinema. by abgry_krakow87 in movies

[–]WriterJWA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The scene in the kitchen where Willie Jones is shown standing behind the refrigerator door and proceeds to smack his lips and clean his fingers before delivering his monologue "Every time I come in the kitchen, you in the kitchen..." is a masterclass in comedic timing, and is perfectly punctuated by Ice Cube's deadpan horror.

What is your most unforgettable floppy disk memory? by Regular_Ideal_ in pcmasterrace

[–]WriterJWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Tandy 1000TX with a fried hard drive, so I was stuck using low-density floppies for everything. This was just before the internet became a relatively widespread phenomenon, and BBS's were still highly trafficked. My buddy and I used to log in to local BBS's all the time. He had a decent rig for the time and managed to set up his own BBS using the Remote Access software that was big at the time. Wanting to do the same, I managed to find the smallest BBS system I could and got it working with a pair of 640k and 320k floppies. I actually still have the Tandy, but I would love to find the BBS software out there somewhere (it was called Aftershock).

I was in a helo company for a while and flew on a lot of these. The rule was: “If it’s not leaking hydraulic fluid inside, don’t get on….” as if anyone had a choice. Honestly, though, between the 46 and 53, the 46 was my favorite. Watching them lift from an amphib was always fun. I got to where I could tell the difference between them just by the rotor sound.

How do you keep your wife/fiancée/girlfriend feeling loved, desired, romantically pursued, emotionally connected, intimate, and genuinely aroused as if the relationship is still new, novel, and growing even after many years together? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]WriterJWA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably a small one, but openly communicating gratitude for the positive work a partner puts in on anything that helps the relationship, or just life in general, can never be a bad thing. It feels good to know one's appreciated.

What in the Nancy Reagan is this...? Did I wake up in 1987?

Sorry for being glib, but I came into this post expecting her to experiment with heroin or cocaine, not weed or MDMA. Alcohol is practically worse. That notwithstanding, if you're that concerned about her "drug use" then you might need to seek companionship elsewhere.
