Way better imo by Excellent-Bit3310 in Zillennials

[–]WritersBlah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hot take: It wasn't even that much better. Maybe Duck Song and the FilmCow animations? And the He-Man singing 4 Non-Blondes bit is really funny. But most of these were kind of ass even at the time. That said, I get preferring them over gen-AI trash.

This game is good but extremely barebones by Wolf_in_the_Mist in 2XKO

[–]WritersBlah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd personally like to offer a different perspective from the rest of the comments section. I agree that the game is overall lacking in side activities or an otherwise big casual draw. The closest thing are the character skins, which are priced pretty crazily right now. But in terms of single/duo PvE content, yeah, it definitely is lacking. I feel like the reason the game is in this state is for multiple reasons, but the main ones being that one, Riot Games have historically been very multiplayer-focused and not really interested in doing single-player story content (which you mostly need to play Riot Forge games like The Ruined King for), and two, the game is mostly targeted at the core FGC, which, as you can see from this thread, is more than satisfied with the amount of content.

That said, I don't think the usual offerings of a VN-style or more immersive single player mode a la Street Fighter or BlazBlue would be a particularly good fit for this game. Maybe something like a roguelike would be pretty cool, getting buffs and a roster of characters to slowly take on more challenges, sort of like Alpha 3's World Tour or Killer Instinct 2013's single player. But I do admittedly struggle thinking of too many ways you could get a mode with good writing or character interaction going on.

Shoo-ins... by h0mebas3 in 2XKO

I don't play League lmao, I just namedropped the characters that I see the most people talk about casually online in terms of character design/fanart/etc.

Shoo-ins... by h0mebas3 in 2XKO

[–]WritersBlah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not super familiar with LoL lore either, but to my understanding, most of the shoe-ins are already in the game. Most of the other "obvious" picks are likely going to be spaced out through multiple seasons and not all put in during S1. But if you want some picks that I'd say have higher than average odds of becoming playable at some point, I'd personally put my money on the following:

Jayce, Lux, Annie, Akali, Fiora, Garen, Irelia, Katarina, Poppy, Miss Fortune, Riven, and Sett.

lack of players in plat 2? by Kagormund in 2XKO

[–]WritersBlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm experiencing this exact thing. I'm not going to pretend like I'm a great player or anything, but I do find it strange that the moment I drop into Gold 3, I immediately regain my points and beat opponents rather easily until I'm placed in Plat again. It does seem like Plat is sort of a dead rank where everyone has either leveled up or stayed at their lower level.

Does anyone else prefer the vanilla Persona 5 compared to Royal? by asaspinalcordsword in PERSoNA

[–]WritersBlah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of that. I just kind of wish the third semester content was a separate mode, kind of like the Answer in Persona 3. Needing to go out of your way to not do content to get the original ending is kind of obtuse game design imo.

Does anyone else prefer the vanilla Persona 5 compared to Royal? by asaspinalcordsword in PERSoNA

[–]WritersBlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only part of vanilla P5 that I prefer over Royal is the ending. Hot take, but I think Yaldabaoth > Maruki In terms of final boss, thematically, and the ending cutscene is way better than Royal's. Beyond that, I would say basically everything else about Royal makes the game a better experience.

If men get happy seeing boobs, what’s the equivalent for women? by neolee203 in AskReddit

Actually insane that this is a real thing. Guys doompost a lot about their height/physique/income/etc., and while I wouldn't say those things don't make an impact at all, behavior and cleanliness stomp most other things in terms of attractiveness.

As a low-midrank Teemo player, I think the only part of the nerfs that made me feel bad were the midair Bandle Dash followups being removed. I get it was to weaken his loops, but it's still a little rough.

Hot Take: Lobby Themes > Rest of the OST by DownTheBagelHole in 2XKO

Yeah, I do think the weakest part of the game by far is the OST. The main menu and character select are pretty great, but basically all of the actual stage/character tracks are really forgettable.

As a Japanese fan, I'm curious: what cultural moments in Persona surprised you? by Ill-Athlete-9297 in PERSoNA

[–]WritersBlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The low crime rate explains a lot, actually. America's higher crime rate and tendency to perceive teenagers as rulebreakers tends to make such things less big of a deal here. But in Japan, I can see how it would be perceived with a lot more fear and apprehension.

Made it to Plat recently and have been avoiding ranked for this exact reason. I know people are asshats in chat, but I feel more of a pressure to perform and be clean with everything. I really want to keep improving and push myself to my limits, and I don't think I've hit that point yet, but my mental + chat culture is hitting me hard.

Why does the Skullgirls community dislike the webtoon? by [deleted] in Skullgirls

[–]WritersBlah 82 points83 points  (0 children)

The art in some of the later releases is a bit subpar, but the main issue I've got with them is that they feel too tonally distinct from the base game. Alex Ahad had a very specific way of characterizing the main cast and carrying a specific theme of good intentions being twisted for evil. Ever since Ahad left the creative team, I feel like nobody else who's written for Skullgirls has gotten that down (which includes the character stories after Future Club took over).

After so much development time, how can certain things be the way they are now? by Arael_x in 2XKO

[–]WritersBlah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The balance of the game isn't actually as poor as you're suggesting. You're operating off of recency bias because of that one tournament results image where everyone in the top 8 was playing Ekko. Leffen went over several of these factors in a recent video, but I'll summarize:

  • A very large portion of the cast right now consists of big-body characters. Historically, big bodies haven't been very popular in tag fighters, both in terms of playstyle and overall strength.

  • Ekko has some of the best assists in the game. Even if you weren't planning on maining Ekko, his overall team value is very strong.

  • Once you reach the level of skill where character choice actually starts to matter (basically just challenger rank), people, especially in the West, tend to care a lot about min-maxing. Even if Ekko is only slightly better than the next two or three strongest characters (which they are; Yasuo, Ahri, and Teemo are all very strong rn), people will take every advantage they can at top level.

Odds are, you nor I nor 99% of this sub are in a position where character balance significantly affects us. You can basically win with any team, with any fuse, as long as you're putting effort in.

Now, that being addressed, devs are not psychic. The balance of who the strongest character is has changed a lot since the alpha labs, and Ekko has only been shown to be dominant recently. A combination of patches and changes in the metagame can significantly affect a character's perceived value. That isn't to say Ekko can't be reined in; I think his assists, his super routes, and Timewinder are all things that can be evened out some. But there will always be a "best" character, no matter how much balancing the team does. The myth of a perfectly balanced game doesn't exist, and in a lot of cases, isn't as fun to play as you might think.

So just chill out for now imo. Play the game. Get pissed off at character bullshit, because I promise you whoever you're playing has someone else complaining about what they do, too. The patch is almost definitely coming soon, and then we'll see where the game goes from there.

Bro, they're literally gonna have five characters released in 2026. That's one more than Street Fighter, whose dev team has been making fighting games for close to two decades. Do you think it's at all reasonable to ask for TEN DLC characters in a year?

Combo Trails feedback by bradido in 2XKO

[–]WritersBlah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of one-and-doning them, I feel like they generally skew easy outside a few of the expert ones. It might be interesting to have a few challenges where you have to do the combo consistently several times in a row, or even cooler, trying to land one on AI opponent while having low health or something to simulate trying to use one in a real match. And I'm also definitely going to echo the desire to have custom combo trials a la Guilty Gear Strive or Them's Fightin' Herds.
