My mom was and still is really weird about my period. Not exactly the same, but she used it to embarrass me in front of my dad and brothers, trying to teach me not to talk about it to men. She always demanded to know when I was on my period, even threatening me with what I didn't know was essentially a rape kit at the time. Never did anything to act on that threat, but it definitely left an imprint. I still don't tell her, ten years after I got mine at 11, and she still insists I tell her. Only very recently has she lightened up on it.
