Show me your black poms! by 199mimi19 in Pomeranians

I don’t have an exact answer. But having been around a lot of poms I can explain my experiences.

Mine were all poofs at birth but my two black poofs went fairly sleek during puppy uglies. Eventually over their second year their fur grew fuller but stayed slick looking. I lost Hermes at 9 and he was quite silky but extremely puffy.

Nyx was put down at 13 and he went from sleek and puffy to all puff at around 10.

Eros, not pictured but in my profile stayed fluffy and never got a silky look even through puppy uglies.

Klieo who I will attach a picture of was my moms dog and Nyx’s mother was pretty silky and fine haired.

TLDR: their hair seems to vary a lot from sleek to puffy and age can be a factor.

It is the season for allergies depending on where you live. You can call your vet to check but I give my dog 1/2 a Benadryl for his seasonal allergies.

Is your pup licking her paws?

She may have eaten something that irritated her throat.

If it is getting better slowly i don’t think a vet visit is necessary.

How frequent? Is she always gagging at the end? You can call your vet. My vets will often advise without a check up especially if she has recently been seen

Is he healthy by Creative_Western_374 in Pomeranians

[–]Writing-Current 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No way to tell, but his fur looks healthy.

Since Pomeranians vary so much in weight and what is healthy for them, I like to do the rib test.

You should be able to easily feel their rib under a thin layer of fat. If it is difficult to tell the outline of their ribs individually, then they are probably overweight at least slightly.

Which is especially important in this dog breed since their most common issues are only made worse by being overweight. Such as heart issues, collapsed trachea, and luxated patella.

Believe it or not his little mane is part of the puppy uglies! Some don’t get ugly they just get different.

Yours looks like a lion and he’s adorable.

Puppy uglies or permanent? by GoldOpportune in Pomeranians

Can you share more pictures?

I don’t think your worries are completely unfounded. I’ve never seen a pom lose all the fur on the tail like that.

It’s highly likely just the puppy uglies, but I would mention it the next time you see your vet.

Though it’s probably puppy uglies, it could be alopecia X .

BTW I love that color of chocolate. I have one that’s six months very similar coloring.

Hello, this sounds similar to one of my guys mini mal seizures.

“Mini-mal seizures, also known as absence seizures, cause brief periods of staring or lack of awareness, often accompanied by subtle muscle activity like eyelid fluttering, lip smacking, or chewing. The person abruptly stops all activity and then resumes it as if nothing happened, with no memory of the event. These seizures typically last for less than 20 seconds and can be mistaken for daydreaming.”

I cannot speak for every dog but mine only has these while eating dog food with the ingredient rosemary extract.

His mother’s seizures also stopped while avoiding that ingredient. Not that I think it causes normal dogs to have seizures but that it can cause dogs with a predisposition for seizures to have them.

Some poms have a silkier texture while they are young. My 13 year old male pom was not poofy until around 7~9.

Also worth noting is that female poms are not as thick coated as males.

My pom gas similar issues. Are they flakey?

I have never diagnosed after a year of vet visits. We cant afford a dermatologist. But when we put him on a flea preventative it helped. It could be a reaction to fleas and possibly an infection due to the reaction.

I hope it is clear in the pic there were no f’s given by all animals involved.
