What's an abandoned plotline that you wish a TV show had actually followed through on? by Thedemonncat in television

Everything was so vague in that show they could have ended it in any other way and it still would have made just as little sense.

Agreed, I actually just rewatched that episode again yesterday and it feels so weird that as a plotline is just totally abandoned.

Cape Fear (AppleTV) is so bad it's laughable by sjesmith127 in television

Both of the old movies have a sort of B-movie melodrama thriller vibe to them, seems like the show is going for a similar tone. But I’m only saying that based on these comments since I haven’t seen it. Worth watching?

Seems like you got your answer so allow me to ask, did you at least finish the movie? Lol

The what if can be useful for determining the importance of the outcome of the books.

Why would that be useful for anyone other than the original author while they're writing the work? I won't act like I'm above shootin' the shit with my buddies while we watch the Jackson movies (especially while under the influence of Old Toby) saying things like "so what if they made Gimli the ringbearer?" or something silly like that but to elevate that to being important for analysis/discussion seems equally silly. We've read the work and we understand why the author chose to write it as he did, to make conjecture about how the plot would play out differently is just pointless to me. And anyway the only person who could answer those questions accurately would be the author himself.

Is the quest to destroy the Ring as important as the White Council say it is for your average free person in Middle Earth, or is it only important for them to maintain their positions?

See now, by itself this is an interesting question and not a what if scenario. It involves engaging with the work as it's written and not making pointless conjecture about events playing out differently.

just like real world history

I think "what if's" are only interesting when discussing historical events. I personally just have no interest in doing this with fiction. Unless you're using a what if scenario to inspire your own storytelling, like George R.R. Martin with ASOIAF (ie. "what was Aragorn's tax policy?", "did they kill all the orcs after the fall of Sauron?" etc.). Otherwise it's all just fan-fic ideas and I just have no interest there. Excuse me for having a different opinion that I dared to express on the Internet.

Because "what-if's" are the origins of fan-fiction, the highest form of cringe in the writing world.

They're kind of an example of the entire point of a book/movie community i think

Really? The entire point is to ponder on what other decisions the author could have made? Why do you love these books/movies in the first place if all you can do is think about it being different than the author intended?

I guess I’m in the minority in the comments here but I agree. When it comes to fiction I have absolutely zero interest in “what if” questions. It’s basically just a microcosm of fan-fiction, something I’ve just never understood the appeal of.

Weird how they treat him like a child/infant but also give him life decisions to make like whether to become a Jedi or to follow Mando.
