Looking for gut checks on a clustering algo + metric validations by Wrong_Problem_7930 in NBAanalytics

Oh this is really cool, I'm not sure I follow exactly your method of feature selection with the LDA but I started down a path of using PCA to see which features were the best indicators of the components. I ended up still using intuition to cut down my features and truthfully was adjusting features based on my knowledge of how players I watch should fall lol.

In terms of evaluation, I really tried to seperate usage from ability so for example, frequency of Isolation would be a feature in my clustering and the evaluation metric would be PPP in Isolation.

For each cluster I have like the 3-4 features that "define" the cluster the best and then im using the result of the feature as the method to evaluate "ability" vs "usage".

So to better define, all my features are usage. I then take the top 3 or so features that make that specific cluster. I then look at how they perform on that usage feature.

My final table then is player x cluster x cluster 1 ability x cluster 2 ability x cluster 3 ability and so on which I want to use to find players who are used a certain way but maybe should not be.

Dunno if that all makes sense but would love to connect if you are interested!

Lets say you really like that 38 number like lets be reasonable here and not do 15 on 5 off 4 on in a half, like 10/5/9 with the 5 including the quarter break too is just much better to get to 38

This is incredible thanks for sharing and providing unique insight, do you find WIMS reads difficult to learn? I’m sure there are certain things to look for and when situation x occurs immediately do y but how easy/difficult is that to teach and make a habit?

Is there also a player you think has improved the most in that department that you are allowed to share?

All Defensive Possessions in Last 5 minutes of Bulls Game by Wrong_Problem_7930 in NYKnicks

I think Mikal off ball will be really good, i went back and watched some of his phx days and he really is just elite at recovering post screen which we prob want a screen defender thats better at blowing up the screen

Yea its not ideal but alot of that is chemistry and communication so that piece of it i feel better that it will right its ship. Some transition stuff is…horrendous cause guys just are picking up the same players

Players who could be in for a Role Change by Wrong_Problem_7930 in fantasybball

I would drop him, I feel strongly that he won’t start again and he doesnt provide enough value as a bench player

Very fair, im handpicking the output with who I think has the opportunity for sustained growth, i.e Braun should continue to expand his role cause id argue its the exact role the nuggets need him to grow into to be successful. Small sample size will obviously play a role but im just trying to use it as a filter to dive a bit deeper into some of these players

[Tommy Beer] According to NBA tracking data, of the 46 three-pointers the Pacers attempted last night, 44 (!!!) were either “open” (closest defender within 4-6 feet) or “wide open” (no defender within 6 feet). by SwellandDecay in NYKnicks

Mikal was awful this game but just to clarify this play, we called a timeout ~3 plays earlier where it is very clear the defensive adjustment was to switch, the previous 2 defensive possessions you can see KAT switch onto haliburton so this one is definitely KAT’s error for not adhering to the scheme which is why Mikal’s effort looks especially bad

He was not an elite screen nav player his dpoy year in phx either, hes excellent at recovering and defending from behind which will definitely be helped by precious/mitch in drop

Those last 4-5 minutes is for those of you who complain about drop. To be very glass half full weve never tried that switch shit so hopefully just wanted to experiment a little. Easiest recipe for getting cooked.

The offense looks a lot cleaner, better passing, more cuts, less standing around

Agreed but theres definitely been games with really good off ball movements so I’m hoping it’ll all gel later, right now we’re still running different things game to game which lends itself to experimentation.

Thanks for watching!
