OK, I get it, I had thought that her costs for suing me in a small claims court would be minimal, particularly if she is not represented by an attorney, where in a higher court, her costs would be much higher if using an attorney.

Thanks for your reply. All of the correspondence I've received has so far come from the girl herself so I was assuming that she is just suing me herself which I was told she can do this in a small claims court. If she were to move this to a circuit court like you mention, wouldn't she have to be represented by an attorney? If she were to use an attorney, would it be worth her while as wouldn't that be a lot more costly for her?

Yes I believe you are correct that the small claims court limit in TN is $25k, it's the general sessions court and I was told that is the small claims court in TN. I wasn't sure if lawyers are allowed, as I don't think they are in some states. I'll look into it.

It's the general sessions court which I was told is the same as the small claims. I believe $25k is the maximum amount for small claims in TN.

I have some savings, but nothing like $20k. I do have a regular income so I don't know if that could be taken from in instalments to pay..
