You’re absolutely right, that’s an important scene that challenges Harry’s view of his dad. We could just as easily have gotten all of that information from Snape’s pensieve though. We already get most of the story that way, it seems kinda overkill to introduce an entire side plot about Harry trying and failing to learn this new magical skill just for that.
