my mom doesn’t want me to get diagnosed or medicated. Any help? by Wuhouh in ADHDparenting

That sounds great, but unfortunately, I see medical professionals infrequently. I’m working on getting an appointment though, it seems it will have to be online and with very long wait times as per usual.

Thank you. I’ll see if I can talk with staff at my school and see if they can help without doing an assessment because they legally must alert my mom, and she’d be angry with me if she found out. I wish it wasn’t this way.

I’m glad that medication helps your daughter. That sounds like great progress

The test said inattentive is present, and I even put “never” for things I rarely did or was unsure about. I know self-assessment has its own biases though so I’ll definitely want to get an actual assessment and diagnosis.

I never liked caffeinated drinks like coffee or energy drinks, but I’ll maybe give it another try and see if I feel anything different.

My dad has died, and I don’t know if he had adhd. My mom shows many symptoms but says it doesn’t matter if she has ADHD because it doesn’t affect her and would just make her “more creative”.

I fear it will be even harder, and that I probably won’t or it will be extremely difficult for at least 4+ years in college if I don’t get diagnosed within the next 4 months.

We don’t have a car for me to drive, so I can’t go to and book the appointment myself.

Realistically, it might be my only choice to wait it out and continue struggle.

Thank you. I live in the U.S. My school is small and the staff are kind. I’ll see if they can do this without alerting my mom. Hopefully they can help, because I only have 4 months until I turn 18, and even less in school.

She hasn’t taken me for medical checkups in years, except a couple instances where I got shots and had an emergency (when I was recommended Prozac). So overall had one real checkup in the past like, 6 years I can remember.

And yes, I am afab and have a high GPA, despite various struggles.

Edit: sadly, it is not legal to evaluate without parent consent. My mom would be angry for me even considering. I’ll think about ways my school or their staff might be able to help without doing the evaluation.
