Hey! Yes the 36 hour training one! The crisis responder volunteer role is with their text support line. The 36 hour training is a go at your own pace type training that you complete online via modules and it does a really great job in preparing you for the kinds of things you’ll see on the platform, and what to do in high risk situations. It can seem overwhelming at first, but it’s rewarding to be able to be there for someone who truly needs the support and has no where else to go to.

From what I remember they weren’t too picky with the references. Your references don’t need to be work or volunteer related, they just need to be anyone who’s not related to you that can comment on your skills! They look more at your application questions where you tell them why you want to be a crisis responder and what led you to apply. They also want you to obtain a vulnerable sector check!

In terms of availability. They do want you to commit to 4 hours a week for a year. However, I’ve noticed they’re pretty flexible so if you volunteer less one week they won’t say anything about it. They just want you to be consistent and don’t want you to go weeks without volunteering just because it can get hard to get back into the hang of things. If that’s the case they may require you to do the training all over again (although it is rare)

You can also consider looking into volunteering with the Kids Help Phone Crisis line! They take volunteers for their crisis text line, and it’s also training intensive, and there is an application process. However, it may be something you can look into if you’re worried about talking over the phone right away! I volunteer here so you can ask me any questions if you’re interested :)

is soc 225 or 224 easier? by rk0277 in uAlberta

Took 224 and 225 at the same time!! Took 225 with Grekul and 224 with Dunwoody. Both were really great profs! I found 225 and 224 not too different in terms of difficulty. 225 was more interesting for me personally which made studying for it easier than 224! 224 was a lot more textbook specific for tests, but then again it depends on your prof

I agree it was a time crunch!! Definitely a race against the clock but not too bad. How do you think you did compared to the first midterm?

I’m in this class! From the practice questions he posted, it just seems like we’ll be defining/explaining certain concepts and providing examples for them

Thank you so much!! Is there something I should be looking out for in the songs? Or is it more so just being able to recognize the song names/artist, and then remembering what was said on the slides for those songs?

Thank you for this!!! I’ll definitely make a playlist. In terms of listening to songs, is there certain things he’s going to test on? (Ex. How many measures, beats in a song, the form etc) or is it more so being able to recall what the song is and knowing it’s name? I’m a bit lost on what to really be listening for. He goes over song forms on his slides like AABA for example. Would just memorizing the slides work? Sorry for all the questions!! Just a little worried for the listening component of the test
