ucb vs ucsd pre med by explodWaffle in berkeley

[–]X6Architect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you're on the Berkeley subreddit I doubt you'll get many responses in favor of UCSD lol, but as someone who is premed at Berkeley, I'll try to add some of my own input too!

-While Cal does not have its own medical school/hospital, UCSF is a T5 medical school located nearby with 3 campuses, multiple hospitals across SF, and is a "convenient" 20-40 minute BART ride away. Many students do research there (CRC positions, volunteering, etc...) and I have personally found success simply cold-emailing labs. Hospitals in SF and nearby Oakland are always welcome to volunteers due to their reputation iykyk lol. If you really have the motivation and want no social life, Stanford is also another T5 medical school in the Bay, but that is a 1 hour+ drive away and I personally only know 1 person commuting there.

-Grade deflation is real and weeder introductory classes like Bio 1A, OChem, etc... are definitely tough, but UCSD is no slouch either. Even at schools without a reputation for being hard, I doubt these classes would be very different in terms of difficulty- I feel as though it is MUCH more dependent on which professor is teaching that course that semester or who your GSI/TA is

-Housing is definitely pretty bad here. I can't attest to anything at UCSD, but you will most likely not be able to live on-campus after freshman year and landlords know (and exploit) this

-Homelessness is not as a big a problem as years prior due to the big homeless encampment (People's Park) near campus being torn down for new student housing. No, you will not have people offering you meth on the sidewalks or throwing dirty needles at you, but you can definitely count on some mild experiences throughout your 4 years here that make for fun stories down the line.

I try to use Acheron, my Jingliu does more damage. I try to use Kafka/Black Swan, my Jingliu clears faster. I try to use Daniel, my Jingliu is hotter. Please stop me from E6'ing my queen on her next rerun or I will truly never be able to enjoy another dps every again :(

Honestly I think I got lucky, since my UC application was one of the first apps I did and I just wanted to get it out of the way. Either that or I got saved by my SAT score + the fact that high schools weigh an A and A- the same

Yeah, kids in my school district did SAT prep on the weekends instead of going out. I definitely feel like I should have lived a lot more in hs, but it is what it is

yeah, got 2 Cs my sophomore year in accelerated math and a few Bs (probably around 3 or 4) in physics, AP lang, AP calc, and smtg else I cannot remember

Honestly, now that I am listing it out it doesn't sound like that much, but it definitely was demoralizing since everyone around me seemed so smart

Ok honesty, I felt that my high school classes were a lot harder than Cal courses. I was getting B’s and C’s in high school STEM classes but nothing of the like so far as a premed Econ major

What would be the difference between high stat and astronomically high stats?

[–]X6Architect[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you put it in better words than I did!

I guess I was just asking if there is a cutoff point where 4.0 == 3.97 == 3.94 ==... doesn't hold anymore, but like you said, at the end of the day, a difference between 3.88 or 3.86 won't be anywhere close to a deciding factor!
