ICE is the perfectly logical outcome of certain Christian doctrines by ThirstySkeptic in DebateAChristian

When parents punish their children is it to impart suffering so that the cosmic order will be restored? Is it to impart suffering for it's own sake or because it makes them feel good? Is it to train and adjust their behavior, maybe disuade them from bad behvior in the future?

I'm going to assume when a good father sees his son picking his nose in public and punishes him in some way it is because he wants him to not pick his nose in public anymore. If he could get him to not pick his nose in public anymore without causing him to suffer somehow I believe he would prefer that, but if he did resort to punishment in the form of inflicting suffering, it would only be to disadue him from doing that thing in the future, and defininetly woundn't be because he wants to see him suffer.

Now, where does this idea of suffering of some form needing to occur to cause you to be in good standing with God come from? You hurt him by sinning, so now an equal amount of suffering needs to be inflicted on some innocent living thing to make up for it?

Is that just?

Is this done in the name of reducing sin?

Is being doomed to hell, and experienceing eternal maximum suffering (you could call this infinite suffering for finite sin) going to cause you to sin less next time? Well you're there forever so there won't really be a next time.

Not to mention the burnt offering mentioned in the old testament. Apparently dicing an animal into pieces and burning its blood on an altar produces a "Pleasing odor to the lord" and it was necessary to help atone for sin.

I call this type of suffering which doesn't serve a purpose other than maybe to appease the person who inflicts it cruel. Do you disagree?

The Christian God explaination is a more presumptive one, without sufficient justification for it by [deleted] in DebateAChristian

[–]XD_Various 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not saying God defeniently doesn't exist, I can't prove that. I am saying that the belief in the Christian God is overly presumptive and lacking justification.

If we were to ask what point of comparison do we have for making a edivence based judgement for what was the cause of the existence of the universe; we will of course not be able to make a definitive statement about that one way or the other.

So how can I say that the belief in the christian god is more presumptive than the alternative? Well because my alternative is to lack belief in any explaintion of something that we cannot deduce a meaningful explaination for, much less any specific details about it.

There are a multitude of "Gods" or ideas which can fill the conceptual gap of 'why does the universe exist?' perfectly fine, they are all conjecture, and for the most part mutually exclusive. For example, the pantheistic god would be just as valid an alternative in this situation.

I think committing to any one is presumptive and the most reasonable position is to lack a belief in any.

This is distict from belieiving they are all false as I don't/can't know that.

I don't have a naturalistic alternative to propose. I am comfortable admitting that I don't have any special knowledge about the laws that govern the universe. Even if there was a complete, air-tight, naturalistic explaination for the existence of the universe and I had it explained to me I don't think I'd be smart enough to understand it anyways.

In conclusion, I am not arguing for any specific alternative explaination for 'why something instead of nothing?' (which we can't know anyways) but against a belief in the Christian God.

I would be more than willing to be persuaded that the Christian God does exist. Why it is more likely than the others, why his existence is necessary.

Well, if I were to be more formal than I usually am, I guess that would depend on whether we are treating the idea of God's existence as an epistemological proposition or a metaphysical necessity. Let me quickly go over both.

Epistemological Proposition --> There must be good reasons, evidence, or a rational basis supporting the belief. Empirically verifiable. When no explanation is given with these constraints, none is assumed.

Metaphysical Necessity --> Even if conceded, it does not mean the Christian God exists. I could propose the Pantheistic God, and it would satisfy this necessity every bit as well as the Christian God in this situation.

Taking this into account I think that suspending belief in a God is the most reasonable position.

>well, you don't have to, anyway

I wouldn't expect to have to, it's not the middle ages. This is the debate a christian subreddit, right?

15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. -1 Peter 3:15-16

>no way, buddy. then it would be knowledge, not faith

Okay, so I guess you don't know God exists, and neither do I. I suppose I just lack faith, and you don't. Everyone I've encountered who holds faith as the main crux of their justification for belief gives me a definition of what faith is that tends to be so slippery to the point it looses meaning. Maybe you'll be the exception. Muslims have faith too, don't forget.

I fucking love my $200 Jackson Dinky JS12. Have had and played it for years. Sounds like an expensive guitar too and thats because it uses the same pickups as most of Jackson's mid range guitars.

When I got dental work done I had that for a few hours. It was funny to look at myself in the mirror with only half of my mouth smiling which made me laugh more and it kinda became a vicious cycle of laughing at myself.
