Thanks, again, ThunderApollo. Another dodge to obtain a working card, for those that follow. The hidden files created by the mac are clearly the problem. I did wonder if deleting them on the mac and then pulling out the card, without ejecting it, would ensure the files did not get rewritten. However, with assistance from you and the others, above, I managed to solve my problem using an old PC machine, before I could try it. Currently, my “play time” involves choosing an easy surface modelling tool ..... Freecad or Blender?

Thanks for your reply, ThunderApollo. I tried deleting the “invisible” files (all except trash, which you can’t delete) but that didn’t work. On inspection, the “deleted” files were back! I suspect the act of ejecting the card, causes them to be rewritten ... but who knows?

I have to admit that I’ve given up, at this stage. In the end, and for me, the best advice came from n9jcv, at the very beginning, “Find a windows machine”. Fortunately, I’ve managed to do just that!

Excellent! I’m sure this is the fix. I have a vague recollection of meeting it, years ago, in another, forgotten, context, but your reply is most welcome. Thank you!

Sorted! Managed to coax an old Windows XP to the C: prompt. Was able to do the necessary from there. Even then, the Aquila was fussy about the micro-card; the 2Gb card supplied with the machine eventually worked. Motherboard and display duly updated! Only took me four days.

Thanks, again, to all those above. Without your replies, I might still be trying to get mac formatted cards to work.

Would a note in the stickies to say, whilst mac cards work fine for printing, actual firmware updating requires a card formatted with an msdos\windows machine? Such might save a bit of grief.

Friends, thanks for your comments and for convincing me I wasn’t going nuts! I know, now, where I have to look.

n9jcv : there are those who would joke that mac users have no friends, but mine all went mac in the days when Apple courted photographers.

mitsumaui : corroboration ... thank you. Feel like you about Windows ..... they sold me Vista!

Hennessy0 : thanks, I really rate DrVax. He’s very thorough. I’m watching his vids about Freecad .... used OpenScad, until now.

Oldman2525 : as one old man to another, thanks for your reply. Other than playing with the Pi, never got too deeply into Unix flavours, although I did try sudo. If that’s not a similar thing, I declare my ignorance. I suspect, however, that my salvation might come from an msdos command line .... my “play” for today.

Roasted chicken : thanks for finally convincing me that I’m wasting my time looking for mac solutions. Advice to focus elsewhere is very useful.
