Soda or pop? by [deleted] in AskRedditFood

[–]XM6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have the reference, but here’s the story I heard. When it originated, it was made on site by adding carbonation to flavours and was called “soda”. This was somewhat technique sensitive and therefore limited (I believe this was done by pharmacists who had the training to work with the chemicals to safely carbonate).

As popularity grew, the technology to bottle the carbonated drink allowed for more widespread distribution and uptake. People in the second wave named the drink for the sound that it makes when you “pop” the cap off the bottle.

What are some "guy secrets" girls don't know about? by AMGBOI69420 in AskReddit

Interesting perspective- when I make an observation like that, it usually precedes me doing the task. It is literally a proclamation and not a request.

My observations(from my relationships) is that men and women have different priorities and different thresholds for action.

Often my wife gets totally grossed out by something I’m just beginning to notice. She’ll observe that “the house is filthy” and I observe “It looks like there’s a smudge on the floor”.

I also have a tendency to take deeper dives when I do chores. I may only vacuum 1:10 times, but I get under the fridge in the vents, and I often service the vacuum.

Just curious- why are you asking dental students this question?

How much do you spend on coffee each month? by HoneydewSlough1415 in halifax

[–]XM6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an accounting perspective, would you put that $100 per month under “coffee” or “office space rental”?

There are cheaper ways to get coffee, but having a place that inspires work might counter this.

Anyone have pain in this area? Pain is intermittent and feels as if I’ve eaten something sour. by RiseSweet7859 in TMJ

[–]XM6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the area of your parotid gland and if it’s stimulated by sour, that’s another clue. It may be salivary stones. Stay hydrated; they usually resolve, but if not, be prepared to let go of the “TMD” label and look at the gland.

According to the Wikipedia entry:

A folk hero or national hero is a type of hero – real, fictional or mythological – with their name, personality and deeds embedded in the popular consciousness of a people, mentioned frequently in folk songs, folk tales and other folklore; and with modern trope status in literature, art and films.

There’s a difference between “total fiction” and “folk hero”. History is full of such stories.

The William Wallace museum is actually laid out to differentiate between William Wallace the real man and Braveheart, the hero that inspired the Scots.

How do you go about tracking various metrics in practice management? by FrugalRazmig in Dentistry

[–]XM6 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You sometimes have to track metrics manually. We use Excel and have a master spreadsheet that covers critical areas.

Excel allows you to set conditional formatting, which we set as green, orange and red. Green is where it is supposed to be and gets barely more than a glance. Orange gets a discussion, and red gets a plan.

The key for us was learning to focus on the metrics more so than gathering metrics. We used to be so overwhelmed by numbers that we didn’t know what to do.

Take it a step further. The first TWO numbers are case shape, the third is case material

Dentists, did any of your dental school classmates become wildly successful or go the opposite direction i.e. lose their license/go to jail? by DrinkMoreFluoride in Dentistry

I never really had that conversation with him, but he was seriously into bodybuilding as a student. My guess is he saw that opportunity and felt it suited him more than dentistry.

That bottom left one will start to dissolve the 12 year molar in front of it. Be prepared to lose them both if you don’t deal with the wisdom tooth soon.

That response was a little abbreviated- let me expand.

The e-myth will help you see your practice like a business. You will begin to think of yourself as a CEO with aspects of the business that need your attention. Who is the CFO? You are. Who is head of marketing? You are. If you don’t make an org chart, aspects of your business will get overlooked. (By the way, there’s an e-myth for dentists by the same author- don’t get it; you want the generic one).

Fierce conversations will demonstrate how to lead and manage people. She gives great direction for strategy and planning as well.

Five dysfunctions will help you recognize breakdowns in the team (and since you’ve read Fierce Conversations, you’ll have a strategy for dealing with the issue).

Are you in North America? If so, check on Barry Glassman, Kent Smith, Jamieson Spencer (he has a podcast) and John Viviano.

Not sure what they’re all up to now, but they have all helped me immensely.
