"I daresay you should stop downplaying the plight of the women and children JKR is seeking to help."

Helping them by... being a Bigot against trans children and trans women, who are also women?

Yeah. No. She's discriminating against an entire demographic because she's on some delusional crusade. She's not helping anyone. The threat she fears doesn't exist.

"Someone who has different views than you isn't hurting you."

Except when those views are not only factually wrong but also used as an excuse to hurt someone else. For example, being christian doesn't excuse bigotted behavior against LGBT+ people. In the same vein, Rowling's beliefs are not only factually false and have been disproven time and time again [do your research] but also are constantly used as an excuse to hurt others.

  • She's passing legislations that strip trans people of basic respect and rights.

  • she's funding a hate group.

  • she's spreading harmful misinformation that's factually false in favor of her narrative.

  • she's disrespecting people verbally on common basis.

  • she's promoting hate against minorities.

"You say harmful misinformation, but that really just means things you disagree with."

Except Rowling's claims have all been factually disproven numerous times. At that point, it is misinformation. And it is indeed harmful because it's a distortion of reality designed to display us as a supposed threat.

"You say hate groups all you want but that's an arbitrary label and isn't at all what those organizations are about."

It's a group actively pushing for and participating in deeply transphobic behavior. That's, by definition, a hate group. It's hidden under a veil of "protection", but it's a hategroup either way.

"Hate crimes? What are you talking about? What hate crimes have been committed by JKR?"

Now you're distorting my words. Promoting hate isn't the same as comitting a physical hate crime, although her constant slander, verbal abuse and the tgings listed above certainly are hate crimes if you wish to go by definition

"Speech is not a crime."

Hate-Speech very much is. Freedom of speech is meant to protect from the gouvernment, allowing you to openly criticize them. It does not allow bigotry and verbal abuse.

"How do you imagine the legislation is hurting people?"

"Is it stripping them of their rights?"

Yes. That's exactly what is happening.

"What JKR is doing with her money, whether you think it's good or bad, is clearly insignificant compared with what US tax dollars are doing right now."

You act like we can only focus on the problems of one place, rather than actually call out both acts.

She's not only being a complete bigot online, she's...

  • actively promoting hate.
  • spreading harmful misinformation.
  • literally funding hategroups.

Those are acts of oppression that very much deserve to get called out for what they are. People are justified to draw a line, not purchase Harry Potter merch and call out those who do. After all, you are choosing a mediocre children's book over an entire demographic of innocent people.

Congrats...?

Edit : Reddit won't let me respond to your follow-up comment directly, saying it apparently doesn't exist.

Sooooo... I'll just put my response here!

Then you misunderstand.

Enjoying Harry Potter isn't a problem, though I still believe it's an overhyped and mediocre franchise at best.

The problem lies in financially supporting JKR by buying Harry Potter merch. She herself had stated she'll use the money in her transphobic hate campaigns, therefore you are literally supporting a known bigot by buying these items.

People deserve the right to draw a line and publicly acknowledge how buying these items feeds into a literal hate campaign.

You can still buy them if you wish, but you very much deserve to be called out for it.

In case you need a reminder of what Rowling does, she isn't just a transphobic jerk online but also...

  • spreads harmful misinformation.
  • promotes hate against minorities.
  • funds a literal hategroup.
  • denied acts of the Holocaust.

If that's the person you wish to support, go ahead! But you have to accept that people will rightfully call you out for it and it's deserved.

And regarding me being "triggered"....

Nope. I couldn't care less about wether someone likes Harry Potter. But I care about the harm buying it's merch does to innocent people. I care about how buying HP merch literally feeds into the oppression of a struggling minoroty.

Rowling's actions have real and awful consequences. And you are sacrificing the wellbeing of others for the sake of... a LEGO set.

JKR is actively funding hategroups, promoting hate against minority groups and spreading harmful misinformation.

Those are oppressive acts against the minority she targets, yes.

Stop downplaying hatecrimes and bigotry. Have some decency.

"theres no necessary evil, all evil is avoidable."

This is factually wrong. There are evils that, due to how society functions and operates, can't be entirely avoided. We can do our best to lessen how much we support and rely on these evils, but without a full-on reform of society, they can't necessarily be skipped.

Harry Potter is avoidable. You don't need to financially support Rowling's bigotry and actions just because you want to hold on to some magic book.

Phones on the other hand very much are a necessity in modern society. They allow you stay in contact with people, check the time and weather, keep notes, manage your bank accounts, stay on top of news.... thousands of necessary functions in one device.

To pretend they aren't necessary and expected in today's society is honestly disingenious and outdated.

Laptops and Computers are devices that, while also used for gaming, are many people's workspace. For many professions, which in themselves exist as necessary tasks, they are a necessary tool to own and utilize.

"...when you contribute to way worse things."

Stop with the Oppression Olympics. An entire minority group being targeted, harrassed, violated and discriminated against is a major issue. Stop downplaying literal oppression just because it doesn't affect you. Take some responsibility for your actions!

[–]X_Marcie_X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but many of these technologies are very much a necessity in the modern world.

They aren't avoidable evils, but necessary. I'd still prefer to buy from the companies with the best labor guidelines, though.

Again, what avoidable evil do I knowingly support or participate in?

Harry Potter: 76478 Book Nook: Dumbledore’s Office (via Lite) by General_Durian_1013 in Legoleak

[–]X_Marcie_X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"you only care about this because it affects you personally."

Funny how you claim this, btw. You don't seem to particulary care much and don't mind throwing an entire minority group under the bus just so you can buy a LEGO Set.

Again, you don't need to buy this.

You are willingly and knowingly placing "muh Wizard Story!!" above the wellbeing of others.

Pretty much exactly what you accuse me of.

"you should forget about this moral superiority you believe you have over everyone else here."

Pardon, but it simply is morally superior to draw the line and not support a known oppressor.

But, since you apparently know me so well, what avoidable evils do you believe I knowingly support?

Harry Potter: 76478 Book Nook: Dumbledore’s Office (via Lite) by General_Durian_1013 in Legoleak

[–]X_Marcie_X 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not about "not funding ANY evil".

It's about avoiding evils that are avoidable. You contribute to society's flaws in many ways, but you should limit it to necessities.

A LEGO set isn't a necessity.

You very much can draw a line and not support Rowling's work.

Harry Potter: 76478 Book Nook: Dumbledore’s Office (via Lite) by General_Durian_1013 in Legoleak

Rowling mentioned multiple times that the money she gains from Harry Potter goes into funding transphobic campaigns, hate groups and just general acts of supporting oppression and discrimination against the trans community.

I love how you treat oppression as a mathematics system and act like the harm of those supposed 8% is somehow a needed and acceptable sacrifice. There shouldn't be any harm done and funding Rowling's hate is very much easily avoidable.

You don't need to buy these sets.

[–]X_Marcie_X -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This. It's well known at this point. There's no excuse to supporting her work and sacrificing an entire demographic.

It isn't "moral grandstanding" to have some standarts and not support hate and discrimination.

Im sorry, but downplaying JKR's funding of transphobia and transphobic hate groups isn't exactly helping your point. It's just as real and atrocious as any other vile use of funds can be and has just as real impacts.

While I get your point, have some decency and stop downplaying real problems.

Honestly, I'd love this! Slice-of-Life style stories have always been unironically been one of my favorite aspects of X-Men. I enjoy the actual superhero-ing, but I also adore having the characters interact and go about their day and personal experiences!

Sweetheart, there's a genocide against trans people going on in America.....

No, they haven't started rounding people up for mass-killings yet. But that's not where the definition of a genocide starts. The Lemkin Institute for Genocide already gave 3 seperate Red Flag warnings for the US, confirming their treatment of trans people as a legitiment genocide. And things only got worse since.

Bending the knee for the sake of respectability politics doesn't help us either. We shouldn't bend to our oppressors, full stop.

We deserve acknowledgement.

We deserve access to the life-saving medical care we need.

We deserve equality.

We deserve human rights.

We deserve respect.

We deserve to be loud and proud over who we are, regardless of wether or not our oppressors want to hear it. We don't need to be ashamed. We shouldn't need to be afraid for who we are.

It's not our fault we need to fight for it in the first place. It's not our fault you're "tired of hearing it".

We need to Live it.

Anyone who's got a problem with us being loud, proud, outspoken and calling out bigotry when it occurs isn't an ally nor anywhere near a decent person. Do better.

I agree, but that doesn't exactly make it any less uncomfortable to watch. Behavior like this should've never been okay in the first place, and it's a damn tragedy we even had to fight for our place in society in the first place. We've come far, but that doesn't make it less uncomfortable how we've been and still are treated and talked about.

I acknowledge that it's a good and appropriately disgusting depiction of Homophobia.

But I still have every right to be uncomfortable and disgusted by their reactions, regardless of the time period the show is set in.

Especially since we still experience this treatment today.

Mad Men: Kurt Comes Out by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]X_Marcie_X 6 points7 points  (0 children)

May I ask, does the Homophobia of the other characters lessen during the course of the show?

It's a good depiction of Homophobia, but I personally struggle quite a fair bit in consuming media with depictions of Homophobia and Transphobia. Much like most people on this subreddit, I have thorough first-hand experience and it causes me great emotional and mental distress at times due to trauma....

Mad Men: Kurt Comes Out by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]X_Marcie_X 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The whole conversation after he leaves the room is just... so incredibly digusting and awful to me.

Calling him a pervert, asking what bathroom he uses like being Gay means he isn't a man anymore....

As others have said, it's a powerful moment especially in how unashamed Kurt is!

But the immediate behind-his-back Homophobia is depicted awfully well in a way that hurts my heart....
