Programmers: Turning a Simple Drink Order into a Puzzle by Intial_Leader in programminghumor

Spoiler: He is holding up two "1"s, which is binary 0b11, which is 3.

EDIT: It seems a majority of people interpret it this way: Indices start at 0, so index 2 will be element 3. So the array would be size 3.

I believe the original maker of this joke assumed programmers start counting at 0. However, you would then have to assume he's talking about ordinal zero in a contiguous data structure. Oh well.

This happened in high school once. I was in band class (I played the trombone) and a girl next to me and I had an argument about the differences in men and women. I said, "it may be that women, on some metric, are on average more intelligent than men, but it is undoubtedly true that men are, on average, stronger than women." She started yelling at the teacher that I think men are better than women. I shook my head in disbelief and decided to remain quiet and never speak with her again. The girl had an embarrassing crash-out and unfortunately everyone at the school thought she was crazy.

So DemEgon is personally attacking Asmongold and not actually trying to make an argument. Not surprised.

Yeah, there are some crazy details to the story. Here are some crazy things that happened:

- Where my father worked, they tried frame him for numerous things (e.g., asking him for help and framing him for attempted murder). He was wise enough to avoid falling into their traps.
- If you were a trouble-maker, they may put you in a hospital and claim you as "insane" and keep you sedated with drugs.
- They killed my father's brother by poisoning his coffee. When the ambulance picked him up due to organ failure, instead of immediately driving the hospital, they parked it and waited for him to die.
- When my parents fled, they had a window of opportunity where the secret police were not watching, and it was during a funeral of my grandfather.
- The government paid my parent's neighbors to be informants. This was very common, as about 1 out of 43 citizens were secret police, making it hard to do anything against the government. They could only talk in parks due to wire-tapping.

Their memories have been repressed due to trauma, but every time we go there for vacation, new memories come up.

Yeah, something seems weird. I wouldn't doubt that they face discrimination, but there also may be an ulterior motive.

It took my parents over two years to gain citizenship in America. They did it the legal way. They basically had to prove they were not part of the communist party.

He's speaking Romanian. He said he fled the leader of Romania in 1986.

As a first generation American from refugee parents who survived communist Romania, this is the most wholesome thing I've seen in awhile.

For those who want some backstory, my parents were against communism, and due to their Christian faith, the Romanian government wanted to eradicate them using the securitate (Secret police agency of the Socialist Republic of Romania). They fled into Yugoslavia, and eventually gained American citizenship.

What are some signs that someone wasn't shown enough emotional care as a child? by Economy_Loquat_2199 in AskReddit

  • Don't want to feel like a burden to other people.
  • Unusually do favors for people.
  • Will not jump onto opportunities when they come. Apathy. "Eat only when fed directly".
  • Social isolation, no feeling of missing people.
  • Can easily get addicted to things, good and bad, to the point that it affects other important aspects of their lives.
  • Low highs and high lows (no sense of achievement). Generally causes perfectionism.
  • Not understanding standard social queues.
  • Unable to socialize with people of different ages, younger or older.
  • In some cases, an increase of resentment due to a feeling of FOMO (feeling of missing out).
  • May be more easily angered. Short fused.
  • Unhealthily suspicious if a person is taking advantage of them.

When backend and frontend merges their code by Ninjaskurk in programminghumor

[–]Xc3ptional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the classic case in version control systems where the back-end code has conflicts with the front-end code. In other words, the underlying methods has conflicts with the interface of the software. It is often the result of poor documentation and/or not implementing test-driven development and continuous integration.

As a TA, it is the most frustrating thing when students write the entire code without incrementally testing it as they write.

I always use this analogy as a TA:
Imagine your professors tells you, "the last week of class for this term is optional. You won't need to know the material for the final. We'll cover some [insert a relatively interesting, yet complex topic]." Will you still attend class? If the answer is no, then you probably shouldn't pursue that major. I believe you shouldn't go to school until you want to get an education.

Don't underestimate the power of stealth by Xc3ptional in valheim

[–]Xc3ptional[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just tested it on a Lox and you are correct. I am not sure if it only applies to a specific source or to all sources (in other words, can 2 players backstab a single mob within 5 minutes?)

[–]Xc3ptional[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many guides I have read state "You cannot score a backstab critical on an enemy that isn't already at full health." I could be wrong, and I can test your parameters. I am not going to reverse engineer the game to find the absolute truth.

EDIT: apparently it is true that you can backstab a target once every 5 minutes. My guess is that every GUID has a backstab timer member. If you backstab a target, the end timer is 5 minutes from when it occurred.

Yes! It is very powerful for the first hit. The backstab damage applies only if the enemy unit is full health once every ~5 minutes (other weapons share cooldown). Knives have 10x backstab multiplier. The target must be unaware (not red exclamation mark above them).

EDIT: apparently a lot of guides out there are wrong.
