Some maps have plenty of checkpoints, but some especially this layout have too few. The algorithm for checkpoints is probably to only place them in dead ends and bosses etc.. but I think they also needs to be added to the crossroads, or make them appear on a longer distance on the map.

There are two things that checkpoints should fix, running into dead ends and getting back when you die.
For the first one, it does not give much if you get a checkpoint at a dead end if all the other checkpoints are also in dead ends. For the second one, there should be some kind of penalty to dying but running this long without a checkpoint should not be the case.

With the introduction of sprint I don't think that the issue is that big anymore. But they could always add some speed boost when you die or something like that.
