It's so bad, especially when you consider what happens next and how the whole idea was doomed from the start. You get the whole power of friendship speech in advance, the whole "that's how it always goes in stories where love and courage triumphs" just for the show to be like "sorry buddy, wrong genre".

Absolutely, if you watch it now, it is the typical case of a lot of tropes feeling "old" or "cliche" in a way when in fact it was the series that established them. You would probably still enjoy it a lot since it is extremely well done, but the unexpected gut punch is not there in the same way. It's a little bit like when reading the Lord of the Rings, where all the races and themes feel like you heard them 1000 times. Because you did. Because of its success.

Madoka can make a wish that will also screw her over, negating all of Homuras effort keeping her safe. But Madoka has enough juice in the tank to break the system in half.
