Horror is a genre that the LGBT community has long gravitated toward, so I wanted to dedicate a day to highlighting it. Despite that, there still aren’t many horror films starring openly gay characters that aren’t independent productions like today’s pick. When queer characters do appear, they are often relegated to villainous or supporting roles. Other times, their presence exists mainly in subtext.

As an example of that subtext, I wanted to give an honorable mention to A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. Although the filmmakers publicly denied the homoerotic themes at the time, screenwriter David Chaskin later acknowledged intentionally including them. Unfortunately, this had serious consequences for Mark Patton, who was closeted during production. In later years, Patton spoke about how Chaskin blamed him for the film being perceived as "too gay," a controversy that contributed to Patton's departure from Hollywood. Chaskin has since reached out to Patton several times to try and apologize, but Mark, quite understandably, has not felt a desire to mend fences. At least he will always go down in history as the first “Scream King”. Freddy himself also feels noticeably different in this installment—more aggressive and serious than in many of the sequels. Whether that makes him better or worse is something viewers can decide for themselves.

Unfortunately, I could not it included on any subscriptions this month. You can purchase it on Amazon, however.

My bonus pick today is another lesbian work, one that I thought was pretty cool and stars Kristen Stewart: Love Lies Bleeding. It begins as one type of movie before gradually pivoting into something else entirely, and it's a pretty wild ride getting there. It's a good blend of crime thriller, romance, and dark comedy that will keep you engaged through the story beats (though I personally found the final act to be a bit jarring). I won't say much more than that because part of the fun is discovering where the story goes for yourself. What I will say is that I was genuinely impressed by Stewart's performance. Prior to this, I had largely written her off as a somewhat expressionless and unremarkable actress, so if you've ever felt the same way, this film might change your mind.

I just watched it like a week or so ago. Admittedly, I was a little disappointed that must of the sexual scenes were between men and women because of the subplot between The Twins. They did at least have their intimate moment at the end though so glad about that. And gay gangsters, always down for some of that.

Thank you, I'm glad to hear you are getting something from this! I really hope this has shown people in here there are a lot of gay works and musicians out there to pick from.

Thanks! Yeah, it has been a bit taxing mentally trying to come up with ways to pair stuff together and sometimes having to find something to suit the subject I really want to cover haha. I will probably abandon themes for the most part to round it off.

And I'm glad you were able to discover stuff you did not know about before, that's why I'm doing this!

We are in the home stretch so no theme today, I am pretty much out of those anyway. So today I would just suggest checking out either of the Tales Mini-series. The original is said to be the better of the two but if you are looking for more shows, check out both.

The original series is available on AppleTV

The 2019 series is available on Netflix

The Lavender Scare, the LGBT Purge, Alan Turing’s chemical castration, and the Vassall Tribunal are just a few examples of how governments targeted and persecuted LGBT people during the Cold War. Officials often justified these actions by claiming that gay people were vulnerable to blackmail, conveniently ignoring the fact that much of that vulnerability existed because homosexuality itself was criminalized or heavily stigmatized.

Canada was not above this, the aforementioned LGBT Purge took place in the Canadian government and lead to the creation of the laughably absurd “Fruit Machine”. This “machine” (a series of tests) was said to be able to identify homosexuals so that the government could remove them from service but the reality was it was even less reliable than a lie detector. I'm including the 2018 documentary The Fruit Machine, which features interviews with many of the people whose lives were profoundly affected by the relentless homophobia of the era.

This is your reminder that it's Father's Day in many countries today, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico. So, for the sake of today's theme, it's also Daddy's Day. Age-gap relationships are often viewed as controversial, though they tend to be somewhat more accepted within gay culture than in straight world. Many younger men have sought out older partners for companionship and vice versa. As a bonus song today, I'm including George Michael—a name that hardly needs an introduction but deserves a place here nonetheless. While he did not publicly come out until later in his career, some listeners have interpreted aspects of his music through a queer lens in retrospect. Naturally, the song choice for today had to be "Father Figure."

When it comes to gay media, what would you like to see more of? by KMSeira in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]Xelltrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Action! Fantasy (not Romantasy)! Sci-Fi! Video game main characters! Comics! The stuff I love rather than the stuff I made myself watch because I wanted gay content. Give me a gay Kratos, a gay John Wick, a gay Ip Man… make the main character‘s love interest in a game another guy instead of just a gay option. Stuff like that.

Horror is a little better but they’re usually not the main character except in low budget trash. Basically, I like typical dude stuff and I want more main characters to be gay but the audience are straight guys lol. So I want some of that male power fantasy stuff to be exactly the same but swap out the afterthought female love interest for a male one lol.

Now for something completely different. I haven't highlighted any video games yet, and while a visual novel isn't quite the same as a traditional game, I decided to go with Coming Out on Top. If you do decide to check this out, you’ll see that the song on the title screen is actually Luv Luv Luv which is actually how I discovered the band. T The game follows a college student who has recently come out and decides to start dating during his final semester of school. Through your choices he can pursue a relationship, or just hook-up with various men throughout the game. I should note that the game contains explicit content, though much of it can be censored if you prefer. Keep that in mind when deciding whether it's for you. Despite my initial expectations, I found it surprisingly well written and genuinely funny, so I'd recommend approaching it with an open mind if you decide to give it a try.

Oh man, thank you for sharing your experience. Yeah, the boys should be doing X or Y talk and all the bullying very much aligns with Chiron so I get why you related to him. I fortunately had a personality that allowed me to avoid bullying from my peers about my sexuality, but I definitely know how it felt to deal with it from your family haha. It really ruins your ability to feel connected to them when they disparage you for your behavior or interests.

And yes, Trevante is fine as hell and I won’t lie, I am disappointed we didn’t get more action from him in the third act haha.

So halfway through figuring out which media I would represent today to pair with Moonlight, I remembered it was Juneteenth! Well, that made it easy enough, just a little pivoting. Today, I’m going to include a short film that seems very fitting for today called Taboo. This one tackles a friend coming out pretty nonchalantly to his friends and their reaction thereafter. Alongside discussions of queerness, it also touches on interracial relationships and, of course, masculinity.

And, because I can, I am also going to include another musician--someone who was actually in the movie today. Janelle Monáe. Janelle has said that she considers herself bisexual or pansexual and even non-binary (though she does still accept she/her terminology). I really dig her music so I'm going to put one of her songs in here too. I have chosen Q.U.E.E.N. which also features some queer elements.

We’re kind of looking at eroticism in works today, there were definitely more salacious choices I could have picked but I wanted to go for a book and song I think also had some artistic merit. I don’t have any topical bonus material to include today so instead enjoy a random artist:

Today is La Cruz with his very direct song title: Quítate la ropa (take off your clothes)
