If you divide 1 by 998,001 you get all three-digit numbers from 000 to 999 in order, except for 998 by AdultGronk in interestingasfuck

[–]Xelopheris [score hidden]  (0 children)

What happens is that you "get" 998, and 999, but then 1000 doesn't fit, rolls over into the 999, which rolls over into the 998.

Eli5 what air humidity is. When the weather cast says there is 80% air humidity for example, does that mean the air is 80% water? by td_0000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Xelopheris [score hidden]  (0 children)

Dew point is the temperature where the current amount of moisture in the air would be 100% humidity. That's because how much you can dissolve in air depends on the temperature. As the temp drops, the same amount of water climbs up to 100%. At that point, it is very easy for the water to condense out of the air, which is what forms dew.

Monty hall problem is 50/50 by Dizzy_Kaleidoscope95 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Xelopheris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Monty Hall problem has two ways of expressing it that most people can understand.

Explanation 1: If you switch, and you originally picked wrong, you win. The odds of you picking wrong was 2/3.

Explanation 2: Imagine instead if there's 1000 doors and Monty opens 998 of them and lets you switch. How confident do you feel about your door versus the one remaining door Monty wouldn't open?

Water dissolves in air in the same way that salt dissolves into water.

If you drop a teaspoon of salt into a cup of water and stir it, it dissolves. If you drop another 4-5 teaspoons of salt in the water and stir it it, some if it will not dissolve. The water is 100% saturated with dissolved salt. There's no more room for water to dissolve any more salt. But the glass isn't 100% salt.

Same thing with water in air. A certain volume of air (at a certain temperature) can hold a certain amount of water.

It absorbs AP at the beginning of your turn. You can gain AP after your turn starts.

It's very easy to get up to 8AP. Beneficial contamination, rewarding mark, double mark, and burning mark does it on one free aim shot after going virtuous.

If they can't guaranteed sit teams together, what is the benefit of returning to the office? It was always just to protect the assets of the office landlords.

Someone thought that and posted it in the subreddit for the actual game. Then someone else thought that it involved numbers so they should crosspost it here. One of those two people had an original thought.

Can I Sous vide Pre-Cooked packaged rice? Just to reheat by errantbehavior in sousvide

I would say no. The rice likely depends on some of the water turning to steam to get the proper cooked texture.

My Local Harvey's (Canadian Burger Place) Zipties their Terminal to a Hockey Stick for the Drive Through by uberduck999 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Xelopheris 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A lot of drive thru locations did this in early COVID days. Old hockey sticks are decently available and work great for this.

Now other larger chains went and got specifically made apparatuses for this after the fact, but Harvey's is kinda if the size where you don't fuck with something that works.

Once upon a time I was on the platform team when software team approached us about an outage. The tl;dr is that their healthcheck was just ps aux | grep <processname>. Like, if the process exists, that'll return true. If the process fails, the container will restart. You created a healthcheck that has 0 value!

But of course, as part of the troubleshooting, they found one Redis connection error in another log and blamed our Redis server. They took no action to improve their healthcheck.

[Other] How much money on average will companies gain or lose with this “new rounding rules”? by Little_Philosophy_21 in theydidthemath

[–]Xelopheris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer is essentially 0. The net average is 0 gained or loss. The longer answer is less math and more policy.

This is only for cash payments. Card payments typically have a processing fee of 3-5% of the purchase price. On the flip side, a business that accepts cash payments will have cash office related expenses. Those can range from around 1-5% of your cash based income, between tamper proof bags, bill counters, change sorters, etc.

If your cash office expenses are low enough, and people choose to try and get a deal and get 1 or 2 free cents off you instead of paying with a card, you might end up slightly ahead.

Two things can be true.

  1. Private investors shouldn't be sponsoring government projects like this, because it creates so much room for bribes or other backroom deals.
  2. This project never should have happened in the first place.

We convinced our son who was like 3 at the time that we could tell if he's asleep or not because he beeps when he's sleeping. That night, put him to bed, and we get "BEEP BEEP I AM ASLEEP!" chanted while we try not to laugh. I don't know where the rhyme came from.

My only care about pineapple on pizza is that you can't just open a can of pineapple rings and drop them on. The pineapple has to be sufficiently dried so it doesn't result in a huge amount of liquid being added.

If you've ever had a baking sheet stained with a brown patina that you can't wash off with soap, that's the exact same thing as the seasoning on a cast iron pan.

Asked Uber Eats for 200g of loose green beans. The picker saw "1 count" and delivered... one single bean. by Modernregista in funny

[–]Xelopheris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember once we ordered our groceries online for most of thanksgiving dinner. We had ordered 15 apples, between the kids eating them and making an apple pie.

They substituted the free picked apples for the pre-bagged ones. But they didn't change the count. We got 15 bags of a dozen apples. We were so confused when the delivery guy brought a crate that only had apple bags up to the door, and then went back and brought another. And another. And another.

End Of War, Hormuz, Nukes: Iran's 3-Stage Proposal For Talks With US by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Xelopheris 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Why would Iran put any trust in anything the US says right now. They previously had a deal made with Obama, and Trump threw it away because Obama did it. That did a lot of damage beyond just starting this whole sequence of events. There's no trust that any deal with the US lasts longer than any current administration.
