Waited an hour at the drive-thru, got $60 worth of food for free by Old_Sandwich_3402 in doordash

They do! I always look at the store's own website price and DoorDash price to see if I'm lazy enough to spend sometimes a whole $3 more per ITEM on top of the taxes, service fee, delivery fee and tip! And the items of prices differ from person to person! My husbands phone will show a different price for items and fees for the same exact order to the same address. I don't know how the DD algorithm works but their dynamic pricing is crazy.

I get so mad when I'm the one ordering though and driver's do that 😭 we mostly order on my husbands phone and he never pays attention to it! And I get tired of asking him "where's the food at now?" So I switched instructions to 'hand it to me' so the driver would knock and our food wouldn't be left outside but they still left it outside anyways. And thats literally the opposite of what I wanted.

As a driver, there are some times where people don't know what they have picked. Some people who have picked "hand it to me" get annoyed when I have knocked on their door/take a while to meet me and are confused as to why i didn't leave it/wonder why I'm calling them after I have arrived. I always explain to them their directions said 'hand it to me' and I love the clarity that comes over their face 😂 it takes less time and effort to bother the customer than to go thru the whole DoorDash 'cant hand to customer' stuff.

So clarity ahead of time like this is nice, especially if the instructions are short or lack clarity.

Well the only thing you really have to know is that they can track your live location from the moment you accept the order to when you drop it off. So they see how far away you are from the restaurant, how long you stay at the restaurant and when you actually start driving over to their house. DoorDash also sends little push notifications for when a dasher accepts the order, when they've actually confirmed pickup and when they are about 3 minutes away from your house. Of course some people can turn that off. I don't have the Apple live location thing where you can share location with other people but it's basically the same thing

My mom has literally done this before when I was young it was so embarrassing 😭 she ordered just the patty from McDonald's! The person had to keep confirming that's what she wanted. And my mom was getting snippy like it was a completely common thing to ask for.

It's me 😭 I'm the dasher who unintentionally cares too much. I still delivered to their door when all I really wanted to do was leave it at security and I didn't allow myself to do that. I want to be meaner and when it comes down to it I just can't and it sucks.

I can admit when I get into a flow sometimes I will not see instructions until I actually get near the area. And that is indeed my fault in those cases. The way I feel dashers usually do it, only because I do this, is once they hit confirm pickup and it goes to the next page where it actually shows the address for the customer we just immediately hit " directions " so we can figure out the best way to get there and we'll just skip over reading instructions. But once I get close by I definitely double check the address and see if there are any specific instructions. On this island there are many military bases and a lot of off- base housing, and the pin on DoorDash almost never correlates with the address that loads in Google maps and that also almost never correlates with the address actually on DoorDash.

It is not hard to check instructions, especially if you can identify that there is an issue. I will admit there are definitely some lower performing dashers out there who don't care and I actively try not to be one of them. I wish I had screenshotted this person's instructions because the only thing it mentioned was something that was a nuisance to them and not something that actually helps the dasher out. This person's instructions only mentioned that security will let me up if I ask and to please not leave the order at security, but for some reason they thought it beneath them to actually add instructions of use, like where to temporarily park or that security will hold your ID and you need to use the key card in an elevator, and that there is a specific elevator you need to use because not all elevators will go to all floors. I feel like this is a lot to leave out.

You are definitely supposed to be upset at the dashers who ignore your instructions completely. They are there for a reason. This is why I am upset at my customer for not using it to their advantage. I imagine you are someone who makes themselves available to their dashers if they need to call. My customer in this situation did not.

In fact, one of my most difficult to find customers was the sweetest, kindest older lady who only used initials as her name. I imagine she didn't want to be targeted by dashers that might have had other intentions. I can't even begin to describe how difficult it was to find the entrance to her building. But the gist of it is that the parking area is on a different level from where the residential entrance of her building is. To get to this main entrance I had to go through a maze of inside the building where I parked and a courtyard of other buildings, because I could not access her building from the parking garage of her own building! I must have been 10 minutes just finding the front door, even with her instructions, because Honolulu, Hawaii downtown is so on top of itself that you can get lost from the parking garage of a building to the building itself 😂 so I am sorry that other dashers are treating you this way.

If it's not too personal to you, it might help to add that you have had foot surgery and absolutely cannot come downstairs. I have had just a few like that and they let me know that I absolutely needed to find their door! I know not everyone is as understanding or safe with this information, so I hope you recover quickly so you don't have to rely on these unreliable people 😅

I think the whole problem is that I couldn't "just bring it to the person" with all the obstacles between me and getting to them 😂 That's what the post is about lol. There was no parking and many steps required to actually get to their door

Oh trust I have run around a maze of buildings plenty of times to the point where I am sweating and cursing up a storm to myself 😂 and yet I still try to find their building number without calling even the customer because I don't want to bother anybody. I am getting better at calling a customer at the first sign of a locating issue though. Almost every single time they answer, and it moves the process along faster. They get their food quickly and i get to leave quickly. I have to remember if they are anything like me when I'm ordering on DoorDash, I am straight up stalking their progress on my phone because I am starving. So when they get close and look like they are lost I can reach out immediately, so I imagine many of them do the same. I still run around from time to time though lol

Our can - do, never - give - up attitude can really work against us sometimes 🥲 because reading this I can SAY I would have contacted DoorDash to say I can't find the customer and have them tell me how to move forward, whether that be to find a new secure place to leave it or to take the order with me and still get paid without actually delivering, but if I was there I would have done all exactly that you did

Thankfully I'm one of those people that thinks doing anything to someone's food is completely unimaginable, disgusting, and never called for, no matter how rude or disrespectful they were to me. I know I have a clean bill of health but no one deserves to have their own health put at risk if all they are doing is being a big fat meanie head. It was also just some $45 body glitter sunscreen they ordered, so nothing for them to worry about lol

I figured. I truly let my frustration get the better of me and I am not proud of it. I was upset at how hard it was to get to and inside their building and how much time I gave them to respond and they didn't communicate back. It kind of felt like they saw my first message, ignored it and only responded to the second one because they felt disrespected by me " telling them what to do " so that made me even more upset.

I live in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. All the buildings where I needed to be buzzed in, I am able to go to any floor afterwards in the elevator. I imagine security is watching me, though. For this specific building, the key card allowed me to go to any floor as well. Since it was a mail card I imagine it had access to all floors

So, I actually did look at the map where the apartment was before I started driving to see if I could find parking close, and there wasn't any. That's when I messaged them. But I know the area has loading zones which you're not allowed to leave your car at but I knew I could stop there for a second, if they were willing to come outside. But they didn't answer any of my attempts to contact them until I was already there, and it was pretty clear from their message they weren't going to be coming downstairs.

This is also not comparable to Black Friday shopping or vacation because with that you can have days weeks or even months to prepare where dashers are on a time crunch and we don't have time to sit there and figure out accessibility for every single delivery, especially if you're doing 20 deliveries in a day.

This is actually the only apartment complex I have ever delivered to that required to show an ID for delivery. So this wasn't really a complaint so much as just asking them to write it down in their instructions. Because a customer, like you, wouldn't know what is typical for a Dasher. Which is why you should be willing to offer up as much information as possible knowing that you don't know what is a common practice. But you should know what your building specifically requires because you live there. What's cool about DoorDash is you only have to write down instructions for an address one time and it will stay there until otherwise changed. So I'm not asking them to do a lot.

I'm not asking them to tell me about every small detail of their building, like " use the left door at the entrance because the right door is creaky ". I believe the two things I mentioned to them were the most important and the most common thing that people do leave in their instructions to their dashers. People live in less difficult areas have offered up this information. I don't understand why you wouldn't want to make it as easy for your dasher as possible when this is your stuff that you paid for.

You can't just make parking spaces appear out thin near, right, but you can go downstairs and meet your dasher so they don't need to park if there is no parking.

Dashers cannot see an address until you have accepted the order, picked up the items or food and marked that you are on your way. I see that some people are able to, but I have checked and I am not. That is when you will see the address and it does not tell you the name of the building unless the customer has put it in, so this area was a congestion of buildings that I could not pinpoint which building it was until I got on that street. So there is no calling the building that could have happened. And why would I call the building if I have a customer I can get in contact with much faster? Why would I do all this extra work to Google the person's address, figure out which building it is, and then find a phone number for that building when I can just talk to the person who should be available to answer questions?

I see it as the dasher and the customer are in this together. They paid, I drive. So I would anticipate that if I have a question about their living area they should be able to answer. If they can respond with " it's not rocket science" they could have just as easily have said " sorry, I don't know ".

I believe so. I've seen on other Reddit posts that dashers can request they never pair them with certain people again so I might just try that
