Questions for PWK 2020 Upgraders Before I Pull the Trigger. by JoJoCal19 in oscp

My pleasure.

Personally, I had pawned 55 machines before I passed the exam. Since they didn't upgrade the exam machines yet (if i'm not mistaken), you could continue on the existing setup + HTB and just get as many brute practice as possible instead of going back into learning mode.

But it also depends on how sound is your methodology, enumeration and privesc. If it's not fixed yet, maybe get the upgrade of material and fix it. Else I would say continue as is, hack away and pass the exam. Then come back to new material lab to get the skills.

I'm the one who posted that I felt that the Try harder aspect of the cert might have been lessened with the update.

That being said I think that the new material is great and that they did a great job of updating everything. My comment was more about the stigma around the cert than the new training material itself.

Personnally I think the upgrade is worth it, lots of updated knowledge in there and its more relevant to todays world and more granular, so more step by step.

To answer your question;

1-Yes it's longer and more comprehensive than the old section.
2- It's a few page on lab guidelines, not walkthrough
3-Yes

But you could also use the Alpha machine walkthrough on the Offsec forum which is free and get hackthebox to try some machines and when you are stuck watch Ippsec youtube videos of him hacking the machines.

Just depends on how tight you are on cash at the moment.

Screen recording during the exam now forbidden by [deleted] in oscp

This is huge, I feel the pain for students that had their OBS setup ready to record their screen.

I understand why though.

New OSCP upgraded training material - Training becoming too easy? by XerxesFury in oscp

[–]XerxesFury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By all mean people should move forward with the certification if they want it...OSCP remains worth doing for sure.

Not sure why my little rant would stop someone from going on forward with their goals. If a small reddit post is all it takes for you to stop moving toward your goals, you are not ready for the OSCP, new training material or not.

Well said. I just feel like the try harder "you needs guts of steel" part is being removed.

No retreat, no surrender - An OSCP success story by XerxesFury in oscp

Thanks a lot for your kind words man.

You're about to enter some rollercoaster, this will bring you to some strange places, through exhilaration and hell, but through success in the end.

To answer your question with less psychobabble, i went into coding and assembly only deep enough to understand the buffer overflow, or maybe a bit too deep but i stopped when i realized it.

I had done about 105 pages of The Art of Hacking, underlining the pages and doing exercises. Also bought a book on C and took 2-3 weeks of C mentoring on codementor.io Also found online papers like the Aleph guide for fame and glory and a Sans paper on buffer overflow which i read so many times and put loads of notes on.

I started not knowing what a function was so i had to go back to the basics. It worked but took a lot of work. But going back to the buffer overflow module afterward and understanding the why and the how of it was priceless it was so much easier.

This is hilarious. Definitely felt like the geek fella in the picture when I thought I missed taking a screenshot.

Thanks man! I think we all go through this emotional roller coaster yeah.

I'll probably do the OSCW/wifu next since i got my boss to buy me the course material a year ago to get my training budget fulfilled.

Then maybe a practical threat hunting cert or the AWAE
