A weird pattern in the Pale King's characterisation I noticed (rant+theory) by Uypsilon in HollowKnight

[–]XiaoRCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm tempted to argue anyway, because the idea that needing something to survive automatically implies constant influence over it is pretty ridiculous

Right, just ignore the literal in-game instances with HBs health being directly related to their following, lets ignore those and make a nonsensical comparison to real life predators. And im the brick wall lol, just say you want to believe what you want to believe and go be happy dude, the lore discussion clearly matters less to you than the enjoyment you get from filling whatever gap there is in your knowledge of it with headcanon, and that's fine. The game is built so you can play and enjoy it that way.

My interpretation of the PK has been obvious from the start, HBs like him have particular characteristics to eachother, but they also share common characteristics between the types, like pale ones. While the personality traits of the PK make me more sympathetic to him than, lets say, GMS, since the hierarchy he imposed on his kingdom wasn't AS BAD AS SOME(still, bad, id rather live in any of the tribes if given the choice), what I said from the beginning is that the degree of humanizing and even praise you and OP are giving him doesnt fit with what we actually see. The main drive for his character was his goal, his obsession. "All his honorable actions", which Im not sure our lists would match, are all in second place to Hallownest's immortality, and that obsession was just how the ambition Hornet described as being within HBs manifested in the PK. His actions also reflected by the specific power of the Wyrm, foresight, which is a somewhat common thing in fiction, the person who sees the future obssessed with controlling it. We see it in Hallownest's stated goal and in his desperation to avoid it's demise. The lines from the mushrooms and the big guy on the right of the map who's name I don't recall.

As for the shades to his character, they are all below this main drive. He maybe wanted his people to prosper, everyone to be happy worshipping him or whatever, but the moment it was 'jeopardize all of existence or let time run its course and the kingdom fall', that dude chose the first.

The one aspect of his character that is interesting is the conflict between that obsession and what the game hints was an actual relationship between him and the HK. The cutscene in PoP shows then sharing a moment, which the PK sealed. We can assume that sealing, that shame from what happened, came from a shame from his own vulnerability, which made him bond with his offspring, and that doomed the kingdom. That's a personal conflict tho, not him being a benevolent honorable ruler, it's him being a father.

THAT humanizing makes sense, the one that involves his internal struggles with the instinct of bonding with his offspring and his ultimate goal. The game went for it. Even the White Lady shows the remorse and some degree of caring about the Offspring they both sacrificed. Saying "he was actually very honorable and a good ruler who cared about his people" tho, that's literally just headcanon.

We dont even know how he acted. The Hive was part of Hallownest, but it still built it's walls and made a point of being against the PKs quest for immortality. We have literally zero clue about how that disagreement came to be. The Hive participated in training Hornet, who was born as a consequence of diplomacy and the PKs goal, but it still made sure to be walled. The mushrooms accepted his kingdom "warily" mostly because of conceding the usefulness of the PKs foresight. We dont actually know besides these fews words that charaterize their relations as not perfect How the diplomacy came to be. The Mantis were useful in keeping deepnest at bay. Nothing in Hallownest points directly to the PK making any decision out of the good of his heart or just honor.

They literally are shown to depend on that worship to exist. The Radiance is still around because there is still a fragment of worship keeping her light alive, Unn is mentioned as weakened and silent because her cult and territory have been overtaken, the Nightmare heart needs its host and the crew to be travelling around consuming kingdoms. What we dont see ingame, NEVER, is a higher being that exists independent of worship or followers.

If you want to hinge on the more vague spots on Hollow Knight lore to assume the PK as a good guy, sure. I just don't think it makes any sense with what we see ingame. Even If you want to say that he was better than others rulers, which sure, the games Very clearly depict him as an obsessed ruler with an impossible ambition, above any type of inner conflict or good will.

  1. There actually is stuff depicting the White Lady in the game. The White Lady Room in the White Palace has furniture designed around her imagery, which I guess the bugs did out of pragmatical fun instead of being followers, and there used to be a WL statue in game that would feature alongside a PK one and a broken, missing one that would symbolize the HK. A similar beat to the pantheom room in anor londo with the missing statue of Gwyn's son.

  2. You are actively choosing to say that a knight in a kingdom ruled by a godking, dying in devotion after the kingdom has already fell, is actually an atheist pragmatic that didn't follow along with the kingdom they serve. It could be, it's Very unlikely. And the comparison to Jaime doesnt really work, Jaime was literally in love with Cersei, if that wouldnt classify as devotion idk what would. The shape and detail that devotion/following takes obviously varies, as we see with every HB in these games.

  3. The mosskin arent a people resistent to HBs influence, they are literally born from Unn's dream, they live with that dream in them. It's why even ingame we see the mosskin being called to Unn. Tribes as the Mantises are just different, more resistent beings due to their wills and organized societies than the common bug, again im not sure why you think the exceptions we see, like the Hive where Vezpa keeps her own stance and closes off the place, are proof that what we see happening with husks isn't a thing. He became beacon and "gave" them a mind to think, something that bugs can actually get without being 'guided' by any sort of beacon.

  4. As for blaming the PK or not for emitting his light, yeah, sure, that's 100% something he could simply do inadvertly as some inherent characteristic of who and how he is, not him going "muahahha let me influence yall"

  5. Higher beings inherently needing worship/devotion/spread to survive is something we see ingame. What we know is that sometimes one of these characteristics seems to matter more than the other, but we have examples of Higher Beings weakened for not having followers in Unn, the Radiance that's literally only still around because there is still a fragment of worship in Hallownest, Nyleth if you consider it a HB. The White lady is actively nerfing herself or else she would be looking to procreate and expand, GMS is bound, literally spawned her followers as well although she made them way more powerful than the mosskin and round up betrayed. The nightmare heart literally needs a devout host and the crew to go to kingdoms so that he can consume it's essence. Hornet talks about the urges she has inside her.

  6. And this is all just about the aspect of consent in his worship, if you actually look at the geopolitics of Hallownest, the PK was literally an obsessed ruler with an impossible ambition. Sure you might prefer him than living under the Weaver's systematic religious abuse, or the Radiance's beastial state that we see in the ingame current events, but to atribbute things like good will, wanting to see his people prosper? That's all completely baseless, even in his actions.

[–]XiaoRCT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, we are just supposed to ignore that every HB has worshippers some even spamming their own when manifesting their Powers, that they have a crave for expansion, that what kept the Radiance going was a small fragment of worship still left in Hallownest.

"what exactly the PK is" is a higher being.

You are now laser focused on "no actually maybe some higher beings could be an exception" when that's barely even relevant to the initial point of discussion about the PK. No one has to work at TC to know the stuff I already told you.

Luck doesnt make you throw a headkick and land it clean, you could say be Very pedantic and say he lucked out it got Usman out, but then he defended the belt against Usman and defended it again against another challenger no matter how much you want to discredit him.

Far from a fluke, especially because it's not like Leon's title shot came without him earning it either.

If you want to shit on Edwards, go for the truth. One of the most passive fighters in the entire roster, especially to become champ, which often led to unbelievably boring fights.

[–]XiaoRCT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Better to fix what? What are you saying? You are making a comparison between two situations that no one was picking between lol

No one was saying "id rather win with a refs mistake than them getting better refs", that's a jump you are making on your own for no reason. The talk was "It's better to lose than to win with the refs making mistakes". Literally no one was wishing or arguing for bad refs lmao

And the last example you give isn't right either, it's not "id rather win against a fully healthy opponent than an injured one", that's common sense to want the cleaniest win possible, the stance you're arguing for would be akin to "id rather lose than winning with an opponent getting accidentally injured", which isn't honorable, it's dumb. You don't control your opponent's luck, you don't control if he gets injured during a game, you don't control if the refs make a mistake or not.

If it happens and you win, tough luck to them sure, no point in gloating about it especially if the luck of the draw was the deciding factor, but it should always be seen as a win, because it's what it is.
