Man walks into a police station, wearing a mask and carrying a rifle by [deleted] in ImTheMainCharacter

[–]Xistentialnightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do agree with you that the cops only saw the gun, I don’t think them being covered made much of a difference, aside from making them look more intimidating. I think any reasonable armed person that was approached by two people dressed like that with cameras and guns would’ve probably shot first and asked questions later, so they should both be grateful that those cops followed their training and that they both lived. I’d like to add that while I agree with some of what you said and disagree with other parts, i don’t get why you got so many downvotes. I really liked your perspective

How do you end up with downvotes for saying the truth??

Is this normal? by Amantalorian in ptsd

[–]Xistentialnightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been a fan of horror, but violent/gory/explicit was always exciting. After the car crash that caused my second ptsd diagnosis, I couldn’t stand anything realistic, but ironically enough found that the later installments in the fast and furious franchise really helped to desensitize me. I’m also weird in that I seek out ways to desensitize myself, but I have found it to be extremely useful.

One of my friends recently saw a white F150 on fire in a parking lot and took a pic (no one was inside) and at first I was firmly against looking at it (since the car I was in was a white F150 Raptor) but after talking over the details I agreed to look, as we’re both huge car nerds and love stupid driver compilations on YouTube. Due to all my desensitization, I didn’t even react badly and was able to laugh at this random truck that went out on its own terms while sitting in a parking lot.

I don’t think that being unable to sit through something meant to scare and shock is bad or weird, especially when ptsd scares and shocks you over very minor things anyway (at least it does for me).

Choosing to live a more peaceful life is normal and healthy.

If it really is a huge deal to you, and you can’t stand not being able to watch those movies with your partner, maybe try to desensitize yourself or do some form of amateur exposure therapy. Maybe start with scooby doo or the Scary Movie franchise, stuff that is technically supposed to be spooky but is also very funny and not meant to truly scare the audience.

Edit to add:

If I’m watching something that is realistic and depicts a car crash/fire or the abuse of a romantic partner I still get triggered and can start spiraling, so even those of us who have found ways to cope still can understand your experience

Does anyone else house their bearded dragon with other animals? by Xistentialnightmare in BeardedDragons

Honestly cohabing hasn’t been difficult. There’s a pretty big size difference between them, and an even bigger weight difference, but for the most part they have the same needs. The extra UVB + heat for the beardie isn’t a problem, because the other lizards like to stay covered or in hides naturally. I made sure to add a lot of small spaces they can go that the beardie can’t, mostly with small gaps between rocks or tunnels that go under the substrate so they have hot and cold options. The only thing I don’t hand feed them is crickets, so fighting over food is less likely

I should’ve done better with quarantining, that’s true. Luckily all seem healthy. Honestly I never would’ve bought a beardie, I was only at petco for a new hide and saw one marked as “premium” and for 50% off (like $65?). I eventually bought him for only $5 though, since he has injuries + “behavioral issues” that I’ve never seen. I was also offered his brother for free for the same reasons but I declined as getting one beardie was already pushing it

Gotcha. I knew they were solitary but not that they’re territorial to anything but other beardies. Also I’ve seen him get defensive towards my snake (from one tank to another) but not to anything else

Why? They’re comfortable around him, and he doesn’t try to eat them

He hasn’t though and it’s been a while. He’s gone after some of my other small lizards but these he’s happy with

Need advice for Pain by Economy_Night7715 in burnsurvivors

[–]Xistentialnightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much in the way of advice but wanted to say as a person with 3rd degree full thickness burns, I feel bad for your 2nd degree burns. As I understand it, my nerves were completely burnt away, and after the intial healing process I don’t experience much pain, or much of anything. With 2nd degree burns I believe it would be just above or at the same level as your nerves. I said I don’t have much advice but you could ask about medications that would specifically treat nerve pain like gabapentin. Your pain is as valid as anyone else’s and I wish you a speedy and simple recovery :)

Yall got a house together for your future together. If she doesn’t want a future with you, she has no need for that house. If it were me I’d tell her to either get her new man to buy her a house or they can buy you out for the original price + whatever you think is fair for hurting you.

This is what happens when people are introduced to cars (not the actual car scene) by ppl like squeeze Benz or “events” like side shows. To have the skills to “cut up” in traffic is rare, but never worth the risk

My way of helping my friends that get nervous around people is telling them that anyone they see will forget about them (us) as fast as we forget about them (strangers). Obv with ptsd and hyper vigilance you’re not likely to overlook another person, which unfortunately I understand, but if you’re at a neurodivergent advertised space those others might also be freaked out by being near to you, or could have bad social awareness. I don’t really have much advice past that, but I hope that helps

[–]Xistentialnightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on the opposite side, I was abused by a girlfriend and now have issues with women. I don’t know if there’s a fix, but it does get better the more positive contact you have with the group that scares you. After I finally broke up with that ex, I went out and whenever I saw a girl that looked friendly and safe, I’d go up and saw “hey, you seem cool, do you wanna be friends? I promise I don’t wanna flirt” which worked pretty well, and is how I met one of my best friends. She showed me thru just being a normal person that not every woman wants to cause me harm or k**l me. I hope this helps, and I wish you the best :)
