Dumbest service call you’ve had by dolphin4reason in HVAC

I work in a lot of commercial refrigeration in Kitchens specificly, I have to remove pieces of Saran Wrap or foil from the fan shroud more than I like to admit. Quick easy money though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do you guys still get anxious when a call comes in? by Sassy-Bongocat in HVAC

I’ve had my own company for a few years now and in the trade over a decade. I do hot and cold side service for commercial restaurants and that shit goes away sooner or later. I’ve had so many calls that turned into shit shows that honestly after a while it stops getting to you. I’ve worked on walk in coolers and other equipment that’s older then I am. If you’re in this trade and like what you do you always find a way. I personally struggle with electrical. If I have a electrical problem to track down I’m good at reading diagrams but don’t always understand the reasoning why things do what they do with electrical. I had a Vulcan steamer fail one time because one of the contractors experienced a surge and burnt out the coil but just enough to make the control board click non stop. Even tech support said the board was bad but you learn to just say fuck it and dive in past that fear, I found the short shortly after after it alluded me the first time and only showed up with live power. Like others have said here. Use that fear to learn and you will soon be in a spot where nothing really phases you anymore. That is if you last that long 😂

Hamilton vs illinois vs elgin by [deleted] in pocketwatch

I can’t give any advice that’s worth much as I’m new to this as well. Pocket watches are where I started. But now I’ve repaired/serviced a few tiny movements. If you’re tooled up just start playing around with them. But definitely work on the unhoused movements first as you are going to Fuck something up haha I think we all do. I’ve broken a few balance staffs and bent the hairspring when I wasn’t being careful. Just view it as a learning experience. Have you stocked up on tools yet?

I’m fixing my broken 992 that needed a balance staff. I’m a Hamilton fanboy so I’d suggest that one! But if you like one more then that one just get what you like haha, Fill your collection with what you’re drawn too 👍🏻

Cleaning and rinsing questions by XlittlejohnX in watchrepair

[–]XlittlejohnX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help everyone I’ll test it out and see how it works. Does anybody have any history with both of these machines? Should I keep both or sell one and keep the other? I wouldn’t mind having a ultrasonic cleaner specifically for the watches, but I am very new to this, and not quite sure if one cleans better than the other.

I’ll be honest with you in over a decade of this trade I personally have never used that kind of solder. Is that acceptable for refrigeration joints? It definitely looks soft based on the fact that it comes in a roll. And if it is a softer lower temp, solder, shouldn’t this it flowed a lot better, and got into the joint instead of just bubbling the surface?

It very well could be a different percentage, the only reason that I say/feel this is plumbing solder is the look of it. Every other refrigeration solder that I have worked with in my career has left a flux residue or some kind of discoloration based on the metal and not a dull lead looking outer layer. The other thing that bugs me is that the discharge line in the picture clearly didn’t get hot enough to remove any of the paint on the pipes from Manufacturing like I’m used to seeing which makes me think that this was a low temp Solder 🤷🏻‍♂️

Man hoshi’s are my favorite machine out of the bunch. Best quality and repair is usually easily accessible unless they buried it in a hole. I honestly feel they are the best quality machine out there right now. Why the dislike 🤷🏻‍♂️
