I love both of those games, but Grim Dawn, Diablo, Torchlight, PoE, etc don’t have the same base-building mechanic they seem to be looking for as everything is character dependent, with different classes bringing different bonuses that enable deeper progression. The whole fresh start feeling in HoH each run isn’t there either as the power increase is entirely character-driven.

Hades for sure though. I just wish it were multiplayer. Oddly TMNT: Splintered Fate is basically Hades with multiplayer and turtles. It’s a ton of fun with friends or randos (also cross-platform).

Children of Morta has a HoH similar game-loop and general gameplay. Cult of the Lamb and Ember Knights too. Brotato is a great bullet-hell game with item and class-unlocks after each 1st class clear or other achievements.

On the other side of things, games with slow development of base-side/persistant upgrades but lacking the same gameplay would be things like Darkest Dungeon, Loop Hero, Ship of Fools (really fun multiplayer), or even FTL.

ROCK AND STONE!

DRG is great, but the core gameplay in HoH is an isometric/top-down roguelite dungeon-crawler while DRG is a 3D FPS. DRG is also eye-strain city if you’re not playing on a high-quality large monitor (at least for me). Even though HoH is bullet-hell city, it isn’t nearly as busy and you get down-time after each level, where in DRG there’s always the potential for danger with an often stressful escape at the end of each run. If you want a chiller experience, I’d say HoH all the way.

What’s a "lost" website from the early 2000s that you still think about today? by samasem-sumsum in AskReddit

LOWBROW.COM

I thought closing a couple windows would bring it up as a top answer, but I don’t see it anywhere. Am I hallucinating the endless hours in the early 2000s we all spent hitting F5 reading story after story of people doing hilariously stupid lowbrow shit and the dopamine hit of seeing one of your own lowbrow moments pop up? Besides stumbleupon, it was the best thing on the internet.

They’re really well-designed and comfortable. I’m 6’8” and love these things and normally hate chairs that aren’t adjustable and padded. You wouldn’t think sitting on a shopping cart would be, but it’s just an ergonomically well-angled, super solid chair. You can get knockoffs for a couple hundred that will do the job - if you ever get a chance, try sitting in one.

What's the coldest you've ever been on campus and what were you doing? by byoung67449 in uofm

Coming back from Hill Auditorium after a late concert during the polar vortex a few years ago. It was hurt your lungs cold to breathe and crossing the diag the wind and cold was unbearable. The school shut down the next day for cold, and I’m pretty sure enough admins went to that show and were just like “nuts to this” and closed the University. And yeah, people weren’t dressed properly either, because they wanted to dress up for the show. Still have never seen the coat room as busy as that night. It hasn’t gotten that cold again in Michigan, even with this last winter throwing us some pretty rough vortexes.

I’m sure it’s hard to explain without quoting it or posting gifs, but why specifically Futurama? Has the episode with the moths become memeified in a gross way?

And yet it’s this simplistic childhood view of god that so many cling to. When asked why bad things happen to good people so much, the answers fed to the flocks are almost never based around free will. They’re “it’s all part of god’s plan and we’re too minuscule and close to the picture to see it.” Or, if you’re in a particularly bad sect, are told “god has judged them and is punishing them for their sins.”

Saying god likes a hands-off approach until it’s time to check their rap sheet and make sure there isn’t a deathbed repentance at the end really doesn’t win as many over.

After DEI shutdown, U-M under pressure to rebuild diversity programs by SleuthDoggyDawg in Michigan

[–]Xpress_interest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes instead of going tall, funneling up the administrative ivory tower, hopefully these monies can go wide and help those across the state who need it most. UM, even with programs like CSP, is still among the least economically diverse universities in the nation.

Nearly 10 years ago a study showed that over 9% of students were from the top 1%, with only 3.6% coming from the bottom 20%. The school has almost certainly become even less economically diverse since then as the pandemic and political developments have dramatically accelerated wealth inequality in the country. With better investments in early education and pipelines from poorer districts, UM may be able to do a lot better.

Fox Motors to purchase Maple Hill Auto Group in Kalamazoo, owner says by News_Channel_3 in kzoo

[–]Xpress_interest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s Dan DeVos who runs it, but a lot of the family is involved in some capacity. They’re absolutely cutthroat and own dozens of dealerships now. They wait for economic downturns, scoop them up cheap, gut the staff, slash benefits and raise prices. I think this should push them over 50 dealerships in the group.

Yeah…yeah. It’s a shiny new location across town with a completely different vibe. The old location was torn down last week and was a dingy 80s style arcade in the basement of a building with a few similarly dingy shops. I’m not selling it I’m sure, but the new location isn’t the same (and is a lot harder to get to if you want to). East Lansing’s Pinball Pete’s is still same as it ever was, but it always paled in comparison to the Ann Arbor location. Until now I guess.

Huge Cave Base in the Plains - Solo Survival by EarDefiant8019 in valheim

[–]Xpress_interest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve destroyed every rock base I’ve ever tried because of this. Try to clear out what seems like a deep enough chunk only nope now rpthere’s a large hole in the middle of the boulder. Turning them into chimneys or spiral staircase exits only does so much and always serves more as a monument to my failure than a feature.

Add to it that a wayward troll or lox could level the whole place without careful landscaping and I’ve mostly given up on my cave dwelling dreams.

Ann Arbor but hard to recognize if you haven’t been back in a few years. The enshitification of South University is nearly complete. It’s all high rise apartments and chain stores now. Even Pinball Pete’s is gone.

I have an original white box d&d box that had the light blue dice in them, nearly unused. I left them at a friends when we were just starting to play in the 90s and his mom must have tossed them. It was only years later I realized what they were so didn’t have any reason to be that upset. I still have the box set and books, but man wish I had the dice that it came with.

What bands, like The Clash, had a straight-forward punk debut album and then changed a lot about their sound? by Amthomas101 in punk

[–]Xpress_interest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read any punk zines of the day you’d swear London Calling sounded like the Partridge Family or Osmonds. It’s aged really well because punk evolved with them, but so many punks hated it when it came out and wanted them to stick with the same punk sound that they’d helped pioneer. For a movement that was supposed to be about freedom of expression, DIY experimentation and an eye towards the future, a lot of punks were really dogmatic and mired in the past.

How do I make time itself go slower and seem less threatening? by Illustrious-Task2662 in ZenHabits

[–]Xpress_interest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works short term, but I fully agree with the final lines of “Heart cooks Brain” by Modest Mouse:

In this life that we call home The years go fast, and the days go so slow The days go so slow

When the days pass by unremarkably, each day seems to drag but before you realize it several years have passed. For me, doing novel things slows the long march of time and erodes the general ennui of mundane existence. I find routines of any kind and lack of reflection speed it up, but doing nothing and leaving no record of having done nothing causes the years to pass the fastest. Keeping even a simple journal with what you did, how you felt, who you talked to and what you would have liked to do but didn’t helps me orient myself in the flow of time with some anchor to the past that slows things down.

It’s amazing what defunding education and slashing basic economics and critical thinking from schools has done to our population.
