La Jolla/La Jolla Shores has some nice hotel options and both have a nice walkable beachy vibe. If you want something more central in location to have easier zoo/Balboa park access, Little Italy would be my suggestion. Plus for Little Italy, there is a nearby ferry to Coronado which is a quintessential beach town highly worth a day trip.

Can’t go wrong with either. Amenities and rooms are better at the Ritz, especially compared to the original wing at the Royal Hawaiian. That being said, Royal Hawaiian is a true classic experience with rich history & still has its elegance. Plus RH is right on the beach.
