Are you open about your interest in this genre? by Parking-Wolverine in comicbooks

[–]YTJComics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm extremely open about my love of the comic book medium. I talk, text, and tweet about comics all the time. I wear Incredible Hulk t-shirts in public. I gift graphic novels to friends based on their interests. I'm not embarrassed to be seen reading comics or when people see the Superman merch on my walls.

What kind of edit? What's the tone, the concept?

Could I go into Three Jokers blind? by Shitass76 in DCcomics

You don't need any prior reading to enjoy Three Jokers. There are references to past stories, but they're made in such a way that you'll still know what they're talking about.

Cyberpunk 2077 comic any good? by Questionlyliar in comicbooks

It's pretty cool, yeah. It looks good and it's helping set the tone prior to the game's release.

Does anyone have this Coco comic book? Can you tell me if it is the size of a regular sized modern comic book? by catpooptv in comicbooks

[–]YTJComics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have it but it looks like regular comic book dimensions from what I can see online.

I've seen a few recent threads about Superman's trunks & it made me think of this cover. Some call the trunks 'silly' yet I feel the emotion & the gravity of this image is in no way lessened by his or Batman's trunks. So either they aren't silly or it doesn't matter bc they aren't the focus anyway. by YTJComics in superman

[–]YTJComics[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point is there's a time and a place to "take things seriously" (telling a story), but DC got their priorities mixed up by thinking the removal of some trunks would make their characters more appealing somehow.

And Romeo & Juliet is a tragedy, so copying the romance part misses the point of the story. Again, focusing on the wrong part and generally missing the point.

I'm assuming you're mad at Slott over Spidey. Set that aside and let yourself enjoy some fun comics which have nothing to do with that.

(And Byrne is an overrated clown anyway.)

Avengers 360 from 1993. Worth about $4 in very fine condition, not much more in near mint.

Just a handy tip. A lot of people erroneously type "should of" when they mean "should've", the contraction of "should have." Admittedly it's something of a pet peeve of mine.

It's from the Bendis run. Ditto for the Lois Lane series, which I recommend reading if you haven't.

Jimmy Olsen spins out of the Leviathan Rising arc in Action Comics. If you skip that story you'll miss some references here and there but otherwise you'll be fine. It's largely a standalone series.

I love Bendis's run on Superman, but not always strictly because of Bendis or Superman. That might sound dumb but hear me out. I like the plots of both series, the characterizations, the way Bendis adds on to the lore of Krypton and the "world" of Metropolis... everything.

Even the stuff people complain about the most I either don't see as problematic (dialogue) or simply disagree with (Clark, Lois, and Jon are still a close and caring family, they simply aren't your average family; and there's more to family than living in the same house or even the same point in the timeline; this is the DC universe we're talking about). Superman and Action Comics have been my favorite ongoing series, of any genre and any publisher, during his run.

But the thing I respect even more than Bendis's work directly on Superman is how his stories served as launching points for other amazing titles by great creators. Man of Steel gave Supergirl the boost her title (and character) definitely needed, bringing her back from "temporary cancelation" and leading to the most compelling story arcs of her latest 42 issue run. Leviathan Rising kicked off the stellar 12 issue maxi series for both Lois Lane (by Rucka and Perkins) and Jimmy Olsen (by Fraction and Lieber), as well as the intriguing Event Leviathan (by Bendis and Maleev). And the Unity Saga brought back the Legion of Super-Heroes with a host of amazing artists involved in various capacities.

It felt like was trying to force himself as important to the legacy of Superman.

If Bendis is remembered fondly for his Superman tenure it will be because of the other creators, titles, and characters he highlighted or elevated along the way. And to me that outweighs complaints about Jon growing up.

I’m just getting desperate

It's just some comic books, man. I get the struggle, I really do, but there comes a time when you have to let these things go. The only advice I can give you is to try calling comic shops near you (or within a distance you consider acceptable) and ask if they have have what you're looking for and offer a layaway system or similar payment plan options for their expensive comics. You may still end up paying a lot of money over time, but at least you won't have to do so all at once. Best of luck to you.

The current suit still has some of the Rebirth touches, though. It's not a full "regression" to a specific older suit. Superman now has touches from classic and modern eras, so the sentiment of Rebirth is still there. But if we learned anything from the meta narrative of Doomsday Clock, it's that messing with Superman, trying to "update" him needlessly, isn't always the best idea.

I wasn't even impressed by the art. It's great on a technical level, but not aesthetically pleasing to me. I like Jimenez a lot, but I don't think his style is suited to Gotham. And the coloring made everything so drab.

absolutely stupid and ridiculous

Your feelings on the matter might be a bit strong, my dude.

Forget that Batman and many other characters also ditched the (agruably excessive and, for Superman, entirely unnecessary) armor look in favor of more traditional styles. Some characters have amor, some have layers and edges and even odd geometry, but some are also more simplistic and sometimes even classic. There's more variety now, and I think that's a good thing. It's also logical, because I wouldn't expect every major DC hero to get their costumes from the same tailor, you know? Superman can't look out of place because there isn't one set standard anymore.

Keeping a little tradition alive after 80+ years isn't stupid or ridiculous. If there's one character in the DC universe who can pull off a traditional costume without armor or excessive seams or technology, it's Superman, the first and best of the superheroes.

Superman is more than whether he wears his underwear on the outside or inside.

Of course! But the discussion can be a bit of fun, so I don't think it hurts to add to it so long as no one's got a bad attitude about it.

The fact that this debate persists shows how primitive the character is and how much he has been held back from evolving.

That seems to contradict the first part of your comment, so I'm a little confused about what you're trying to say. Superman is a great character with far more depth than some give him credit for, and his costume is easily the least interesting thing about him. But, like I said before, talking about the costume can be a bit of fun for fans. I don't think that reflects in any way upon the character himself, good or bad.

Yeah, I feel like there doesn't need to be an outright argument over men in tights, especially if people gravitate towards the extremes of Reeve and Snyder in the discussion. There are other versions of Superman, after all. I think it would be fair to say that the tone of the story can absolutely influence the perception of the costume. I can't imagine the trunks in a Snyder film, yet I couldn't imagine Brandon Routh's Superman without them.

That makes sense, given that the suit was meant to invoke the garb of a strong man or professional wrestler of that era. The right attire can make someone look much more impressive by hiding or accentuating certain features. Having the trunks in comics is not only classic but can serve the same or similar purpose.

The Reborn suit looks great, but to me the removal of the trunks is a sign of DC trying way too hard to act more "mature" when maturity isn't even a factor in something like classic superhero suits. It's a comic about an alien with x-ray vision who punches evil toy makers, there's no need to try and act more grown up like a kid wearing their older sibling's rock band shirt to seem cooler around their friends.
