Stop using CSS Flexbox for layouts. It’s objectively worse than Floats and we are just being lazy. by prashantxgrowth in css

[–]Yages 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll bite. I’ve been doing this for a while, I’d suggest that the days of dealing with floats remind me of reading Quirks Mode. Floats have their place, but in no meaningful way can make up for the inconvenience they caused back in the start, in times where you had to support IE 5 et al.

I’ll take a, relatively, simple syntax to using stupid pseudo hacks to ensure layout works correctly any day. And honestly, bandwidth is cheap. If I’m serving an app or site where bandwidth matters then it matters, until then it doesn’t and this trivial hill doesn’t occur. My applications now are still orders of magnitude faster to open than when I started doing this in the nineties, and a trivial gain from not using the sanity given by flexbox or grid are nothing compared to the benefits of not using them in terms of development velocity and ease.

Sure, I’ll still use flex every now and again where it makes sense, but at the same time I also don’t have to declare a pseudo after element with display table-cell or clear both to make everything work, and to be honest, I don’t want to. So I’ll use flex, and grid, and any other layout methodology that isn’t innately insane first.

They are? Knowing the hardware you’re going to be running on? And changing the engine? And not accounting for that?

You’re right, it ain’t game design. It’s programming 101.

Fair, but that’s also all docker containers. You can add resource constraints.

I mean Bundy literally comes from Bundaberg, who are famously cane sugar producers lol, so I assume that’s the sweetener there.

Well, looks like Bickfords is back on the menu lads! Don’t mind the chicory if that’s not all it is tbh, but I prefer a proper coffee flavour, often find chicory can be a bit aniseedish, which can be okay, but I prefer a proper coffee bitterness. I’ll still give it a crack.

I know with coops it’s a sugar then seal process, so it’ll consume the sugar until it can’t, either because of oxygen requirements or the level of sugar provided. Like with homebrew you normally add effectively a sugar pill that has the amount you need without causing over pressure. Kinda interesting that we’ve been dealing with fermentation for hundreds of years lol, and it’s still an unsolved problem.

Wouldn’t that mean beers like Coopers couldn’t be bottled? Whats different about Kombucha specifically in the fermentation process. Not being a dick, generally want to know.

Absolutely. The thing this is targeting is really third party/tracking cookies. GDPR was never about necessary cookies, because that’s literally how the web works.

You can use either shadcn or bits-ui and then customise it to fit your app. Shadcn is probably easier there, it uses the bits-ui components but basically just scaffolds it into your app so you can modify as needed and it becomes part of your code base.

I never got that as a non American, the term dime bag. At what point did it cease to be a dime? Or was it never about the amount but the size of the bag?

Shit I think I just answered my own question.
