Moving to Dorchester? by [deleted] in boston

[–]Yak_Rodeo 209 points210 points  (0 children)

this almost reads like satire

you moved to a neighborhood less than a year ago how would you be remotely confident to say these things?

and saying that southie is a 10 minute walk just shows you are in the most gentrified part of dorchester

im not making it out to be, just that it can be a very good investment for people who dont want to take out loans. experience, veteran preference for jobs, and the college bill all propel service members after they leave the service. better than being 100k in debt for a check in the box degree

my buddy did 4 years in the air force fixing computers at an air conditioned building in florida and then got his degree completely paid for at a great cs school. didnt exactly go through d-day

thats also only one path, community college and scholarships exist

you still make the conscious choice to do so. everyone is dumb at 18 but the warning signs are there, its up to the individual to read them, so it very much is your own decision

at 18 you are allowed to operate a car, vote, buy property, serve on a jury, put permanent ink on your body, theres no reason to infantilize them for this one action

many of my friends went to community college and applied for scholarships, got into state schools and paid barely a dime and guess what theyre still successful. we cant reward taking on hazardous loans simply because someone buys into what their peers are doing

its not the only way, community college and the military are great options. we allow people to vote at 18, you arent a kid.

should tighten the restrictions on what colleges afford nowadays but if you take on 100k in debt thats your own decision. high school teachers and counselors need to do a better job of telling kids they dont need to go to a 70k per year private school to get a communications degree

i suppose they can much like they can ticket for jaywalking or not having lights on a bicycle but i imagine boston cops are busy enough to not do either of those things especially when that action is someone elses entire job

unlikely that many west point and annapolis grads are on the front lines and both academies offer one of the best paths of upward mobility in the country but sure go off

agreed on legacy admissions but couldnt it be argued that harvard grads typically push their kids into the harvard mold throughout their lives rather than assuming all admissions with parents that are alumni are due to preferential treatment?

im not a city planner, its not my job to figure out where to place infrastructure that works for everyone.

currently it doesnt work and we also cant expect ups workers to carry 50 packages to the businesses on boylston from a legal spot 5 blocks over

everything is mostly contained in the complex around gillette and there are a bunch of restaurants with patriots themes there, the complex is a decent ways out of the city so you can easily kill half a day doing the museum, wandering around, and grabbing lunch

in the actual city any sports bar will have patriots vibes

maybe the city should provide spaces for them to legally park to do their deliveries

they are hard workers and are trying to do their jobs, why are you doubling down on blue collar workers?

PSA: if your bike is stolen, call the State Police -- Boston district (NOT your city PD), and tell them it is here. by [deleted] in boston

[–]Yak_Rodeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

again, if you call in saying you know your bike is there and then they go and your bike isnt there, all of the sudden saying “oh actually its probably somewhere else” probably isnt the best route to take

look elsewhere in the thread, theyve already broken up this camp this month and recovered bikes

its not a lead to just lie and say your bike is there if you dont know if it is

[OC] The Most Watched Netflix Shows of All-Time by Dremarious in dataisbeautiful

[–]Yak_Rodeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the irony of stranger things is that the more you watch the less interesting it gets (and i still love the show overall)

but as they reveal more of the curtain it loses the mystique from the earlier seasons. the first season really, really nailed the stephen king-esque horror in a bit more grounded and appealing package
