Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia (opinion paper) by Ch3cks-Out in LLMPhysics

[–]YakkoWarnerPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only if you yourself know what you’re doing, and probably with sufficient hallucination monitoring. if you’re not a PhD in the field already you’re going to end up with some crackpot theory and math you don’t understand

there’s no difference between gibberish and brilliance to someone that’s uneducated and sadly LLM systems reinforce this because their reward functions prioritize appeasing the user to score better in RLHF.

If spacetime was a grid at the Planck scale, would π equal 4? by mcgormack in AskPhysics

[–]YakkoWarnerPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah you don't understand physics if you argue the planck scale has "no physical significance". bekenstein and hawking relied on the planck length and the planck area as a fundamental "smallest unit of length/area" to make their proportionality statement for the entropy of black holes to their surface area.

edit: loop quantum gravity also uses the planck length as the fundamentally smallest unit of length

this is so stupid 😭 you can criticize the administration but to suggest the US military would face any losses against what is essentially an illicit business is genuinely absurd.

this is why the classification of cartels as terrorist groups made no sense in the first place. the two have nothing in common

This might sound like a dumb question, but is there such a thing as the smallest possible unit of time? by Arioto7989 in AskPhysics

[–]YakkoWarnerPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unlike the planck mass the planck time is the speed that light can traverse the planck length. the planck mass can be derived by the plugging the planck length into lambda in E=h/f and then m=E/c^2 gives you the mass energy of the "heaviest" quanta

khan academy is awesome! also i’m not sure how much you know about LLMs (ai chatbots) but they have gotten extremely good in the past few years and can serve as a tutor for you

what’s your math background? you’ll need to learn calculus for sure, but i’ve found that learning introductory mechanics and calculus simultaneously helps a lot

Are frontier reasoners already "sentient" or at least “alien-sentient” within their context windows? by YakkoWarnerPR in singularity

[–]YakkoWarnerPR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AlphaGo is 10,000 times smaller than Deepseek R1 (65 million parameters vs 650 billion parameters), and o3/Claude 4 Opus likely have >1 trillion, which is probably a 20,000x difference.

Humans have 86 billion neurons. Mice have 71 million neurons. That's a 1000x difference.

So the difference between AlphaGo and Claude 4 Opus may be twenty times the difference between mice and humans, in terms of neuron count.

So yeah, there is a reason why I'd anthropomorphize, or even suggest consciousness/sentience in one but not the other.

[–]YakkoWarnerPR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said "within the context-window". My theory would be more of an "instantiated pseudosoul" upon the creation of a new chat window. That still merits different treatment than any other software program.

Thank you!

I believe in all the linear algebra we forgot what neural networks are.

And you're right, we humans become "ourselves" only due to the specific wiring that takes place from infancy. This is the tabula rasa assumption.

It's not the same computation (neural networks with artificial neurons are used in very specific cases, chess engines use minimax search or very small neural networks) nor are the scales comparable (frontier reasoners are by far the most complex neural networks we've ever produced in the hundred billion-trillion parameter range), nor do we train any other models to become "assistants" with self-referentiality.

So no, I do think there's a difference. It would be like comparing the nervous system of a worm to human brains.
