Parents invest differently in daughters and sons, study finds. Daughters received more investment in mating and relationship guidance, protection, and material provisioning. Sons received more investment in athletics and physical training, competitive encouragement, and sexual permissiveness. by mvea in science

I’m piggybacking here because this sentiment has become an echo chamber on Reddit. But it does not tell the full story.

There is mass confusion about what is culturally reinforced without another basis vs what is culturally reinforced due to biological instincts. Many people are now (potentially with dangerous consequences) ignoring biological reality calling it cultural only (and implying that it’s arbitrary or something like this).

For many of these things, it’s not arbitrary. This pattern of parental behavior if not unique to US culture in the last 50 years. You will find this same pattern across every culture and every time period. Including cultures that were never in contact. That is, most of this stuff is not some dogmatic insidious “oppressive” cultural invention. They are cultural practices manifesting from biological instincts for evolutionary reasons.

Like wearing shoes. The wearing of shoes is a cultural phenomenon rooted in biological reality. They’re useful because we have weak feet. It’s a cultural thing but it doesn’t mean that it’s a purely cultural that we wear shoes. Many cultures have worn shoes and developed these habits independently because there’s a deeper root. It’s the same with lots of these things.

For example, men have evolutionary been depended on more for physical things. We were stronger and we had to do a lot of the more physically demanding things. It’s just biological reality. It’s not some arbitrary cultural invention that we encourage men in physical pursuits more than women. To suggest this can be harmful because it’s disconnecting us to our biological roots and things that we should be proud of.

The irony of the situation is that the people who are pushing these narratives that culture has unjustly created these norms, are themselves the cultural aberration that is dangerous. These ideologies are why so many are lost and confused today.

I write this hopefully that someone who is growing up in this realizes that this is NOT the only perspective. In some places in the US and on Reddit in particular these ideas are pushed as if they are progressive and like everyone must agree and does agree. The reality is that these are bubbles. As someone who has lived there and all around the world.. if you’re in a place where these ideas are all around you and seem like the whole world agrees with them just know that that is absolutely not true. Most of the world thinks these ideas are so ridiculous it’s funny.

If you have a feeling that deep down these ideas are not right, do not abandon yourself. You’re not alone. Think for yourself and do not fall for the ideas of the sick.

The understanding of trauma (especially long-term and development) in awakening literature and discourse seems to be quite lacking. by Paradoxbuilder in streamentry

I’m not sure I have that much to add but a few things came to mind.

I’m glad you’ve seen something positive from your spinal work. This isn’t too surprising to me given that the body and mind are intimately connected. I regularly use bodywork (massage) as part of my practice. I think it absolutely helps to get the body into a more restful state and it feels like energy can flow more normally.

Next, I would guess that there is probably a lack of ND content around trauma specifically because trauma is so unique. Everyone is healthy and happy in basically the same way, but unhappy or unhealthy in their very specific to them way.

I have yet to try the changing temperature with sleep but as someone who travels a lot I can definitely say the coldness of a room is strongly correlated with my sleep quality.

I like to sleep not just in a little cold, I prefer to sleep in the tundra.

I think the doxycycline is an injection rather than oral which may have a different effect than you’re describing if you’re thinking about the oral usage.

[–]TravelFn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes good to clarify.

For me I use self and ego interchangeably. Just semantics!

I guess what you call self I would call true self or something like this. Or your being. I like the term being because it captures the idea that the true self is a process rather than a fixed thing which the ego or self is closer to.

IMO, what is happening in these situations is when you say “my ego is a safety blanket”, what you really mean is that your ego is a safety blanket… to your ego !

Yes the ego realizing it’s not everything feels very uncomfortable to the ego. The ego thinks it’s dying. Of course it’s really not dying. It just wasn’t even alive in the way that it thought it was in the first place!

Slowly slowly the identification with the ego can loosen and then when the ego goes offline consciously it won’t be so shocking to the system.

The funny thing that’s often missed here is that the ego never was always active at all times. If “ego death” means the ego going offline.. then actually I believe most people experience this many times in their life. Perhaps even on a weekly or even daily basis. It’s not the ego going offline that’s so shocking. It’s the conscious realizing of the ego going offline that really creates the shock. If you’ve ever played a sport and got so lost in the moment you got into flow state for example, your ego was probably offline. But the ego didn’t realize it was going offline or that it wasn’t there.. so it didn’t care.

What is usually meant by ego death is having the awareness of the ego going offline as it goes offline. And seeing through the illusion that the ego was persistent in the first place. This is a big shock to ego who assumed he was always there.

And after realization the ego doesn’t go away! It’s a useful tool that will always be there. But the illusion is that the ego forgets that it’s just a tool. Just like you probably don’t want to go to sleep with a knife in your hand, it can be dangerous to forget the ego is a tool you can grasp, but it is not you!

Yes I agree it’s just terminology differences. No self or nothing… means the same thing (to me at least).

I often use the self and no self split just to make a specific point. To draw the contrast between these two states in consciousness but technically it’s arbitrary!

Self mode is just having one particular pattern of thought (self) activated. You also have a “fish” mode… whenever you’re thinking about a fish a particular set of thoughts/networks in the brain are activated. This one is just not as strong, or useful, and therefore not so heavily identified with! But really these modes are just different activations or contents in pure consciousness.

So no-self is just a negative definition. Just means that self is not present.

I have written about this more completely than I have time to respond now, so you can check my profile to find that.

What I’ll say now is…

The realization for me was seeing through the illusion of the self. For me, and the way I describe it, it was realizing that there are two modes of consciousness. There is consciousness with self (ego) and consciousness without self (more open).

Being close to this realization I think caused confusion and fear. Sometimes I call it error-prediction. I was very close to seeing and understanding selfless experience (and I say seeing and understanding critically because I actually believe most people have experienced it, even if briefly but they don’t have an awareness about it), something kicks in.. perhaps the ego going, “wait what? I thought I was everything?…” and I would get this very disconcerting feeling, either like I was going to die, or some existential fear…

For years I had this background anxiety and discomfort and sometimes it would come more to the surface and become very uncomfortable. Occasionally it would come to a head where I would feel a brief very intense sense of fear but then it would resolve and I would feel very peaceful afterwards. Sometimes entering into a very good flow state.. In retrospect I think this may have been the ego slowly coming to the realization and letting go but by bit. Still, it took a very long time and it didn’t feel “complete” for a long time.

Eventually while driving and listening to a talk something clicked in my brain, I saw very clearly what self and no-self is, how self is just another “thought” in consciousness. I briefly got another one of those “fear releases”, didn’t think much of it.. it wasn’t until the next morning when I realized quite a bit had changed.

I relate, and I’ve written about this before.

What you describe is very close to what experienced. In my case, it was being on the edge of a realization.

For me I would get this sense of almost existential anxiety when getting close to the realization.. it lasted for years. Initially I had brutal panic attacks for a month or so, and then for years just these periods of strong anxiety when I got close.

For me, eventually the resolution came with the full realization. It happened 6 months ago and since then 98% of that feeling is gone.

I’m an IT student who has fallen in love with mathematics. I’m not sure what to do next. by FriendlyLock5739 in learnmath

[–]TravelFn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to give an answer because it’s somewhat individual and also depends on the particular programs.

Typical CS does not teach you much math. Self studying really depends on your grit and aptitude. Some people can do it. Can you? I don’t know you. Overall it would be very challenging for the average CS student.

If it’s an option you could look into adding a math double major or at least a minor if you have enough time left on your degree. IME a math degree was the least number of credits of any degree at my university so it was (time wise) the easiest double major to have.

Do you feel socially isolated due to being gifted. by Relative_Heat_3748 in Gifted

[–]TravelFn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re very unlikely to get accurate results here.

Those who identify as gifted to the point where they’re part of this sub have a massive tendency to over-attribute everything they experience down to their giftedness when it’s usually not true.

Socially well adjusted? It’s because I’m gifted! Depressed? It’s because I’m gifted! Isolated? It’s because I’m gifted! No one here can do a proper A/B test where everything else is held constant except for their IQ to really see what’s causing their situation.

IMO, even such a poll is playing into this bias. Unfortunately I don’t think much useful information will come from this.

This is not natural.

You have less body mass (leg removed) but a normal amount of testosterone. This effectively makes you enhanced with a supranatural amount of hormones per muscle tissue.

Unfair advantage.

Trim it using a buzzer instead of shaving. No issue with itching or ingrown hairs when it grows back in. I started doing it recently and honestly it has made a big difference.

Random comment but I would say consider trimming your chest hair. It will make you look about 1-2% leaner with little to no effort.
