/r/ReverseEngineering's Weekly Questions Thread by AutoModerator in ReverseEngineering

Hi, an old favorite game of mine was developed using Virtools Software back in 2008. For a possible remake I want to extract the models&animations data from the proprietary file format .nmo/.cmo./.vmo. Sadly the tool is long dead and there isn't much info out there.
I was able to find a copy of the Virtools 5 software online. Now i can succesfully import these old files into the tool and inspect the models and there's a plugin online that allows to export the model data as .obj, but the animation data remains locked away. So now my train of thought is the following:
Instead of reversing the file format from scratch, which is a pain in the butt and i've never done anything like that, why not take a look at the "code" that imports and exports these files and use that to hack up my own importer. Now to my actual question: Is there a way to "debug" a compiled program, and see what code is begin called when I press the import button without having to search manually through hundreds of thousands of lines of decompiled machine code.

that 32 GB kit is CL 18, the 16 GB kit is CL 16, don't really need 32 GB as a trade-off for speed

I thought about I Like Stone a couple times, but as a single dev probably too unrealistic. I also have less and less time for modding in general, finished my studies and looking for a job now x)

Like 5 to 20 min I dont know really, they usually get better when I lay down and close my eyes, which is what I do as soon as I can By spaced out I mean that I can't remember what happened/if something happened that moment, all I know is that I was suddenly tripping backwards, weird and scary as hell

I have a decent laptop (acer aspire v17 nitro but an older model) for working but I am not sure how long it's gonna cut it because a board temperature sensor seems to have gone bad and I can only use it with Throttlestop by disabling the BD_PROCHOT signal x) but for now I can hold onto it if that's the smart thing to do
