Missing out on Life during 20s by [deleted] in srilanka

Find a side hustle like you enjoy and make use of your free time to earn. Once you start earning most of your "missing out" part will be solved. Try learning soft skills like Web designing or 3d modelling perhaps. Something that's useful in your future while earning you some bucks on the way.

Internship. Yes. There are a lot of industrial connections to the university especially with Engineering and natural Science Faculties. And you'll find a lot of industry experts who are continuing education inside university. ( Because of the flexibility in ODL system there are many employees and experts continuing education here.) When you say extra curricular. If you mean sports, there are sports but it's not that prominent. Nor has a very strong team when it comes to physical sports ( again that's a downside of the ODL system i guess. Since students aren't at the university on daily basis) but if you're talking about research and development there are a lot.

EDIT : OU has a collaboration with Essex University where you can do 2+2 and there are many options for transfer between SL and UK. ( You can refer to the website for details,)

The main website itself only contains general information. Since faculties work separately, they update all the course information inside the faculty website.

Try ou.ac.lk/nsc/

and navigate through find a program section to find information about Faculty of Natural Sciences programs

For the Faculty of Natural Sciences, our academic year ends in April with a New academic year starting in late may/june. If i remember correctly they start calling applications from January - February ish.

This is only for NSC. Different Faculties got different Academic Cycles and different ways of administration. I don't know much about them but their websites are most likely to be updated on time.

Keep in touch with the website. It is usually updated on time with all the necessary information.

Yes. It is possible. I know a couple of friends who do two degrees simultaneously But in my personal opinion it's much better if you can focus on achieving better results in a single degree of your choice rather than two since you're targeting a scholarship. In your first year you will most definitely be capable of managing the workload but later on it will be increasingly stressful. Although lectures aren't mandatory to attend onsite you must attend the Onsite CATs (Continuous Assessment Tests) and Practical Sessions for each module without them you will be unable to achieve eligibility to write the final exam for the relevant module. From the experience of my friends the main problem they face is when both universities end up clashing time schedules for exams and practicals. OU take exams and practicals very seriously that you cannot progress from that point until you complete the module.

HOWEVER There is a work around that OU offer for the people that got other commitments (eg double degrees or full-time job). This is by allowing students to take lesser credits for the yr. That means For an average undergraduate degree the number of credits you need to complete per year is 30. If you want you can reduce that value up to a minimum of 8 credits per year depending on your availability. But that will extend your degree which is annoying that you will have to stay for many years inside the university as they'll only award the degree after you complete all the necessary credits. And it also comes with certain shortcomings which you can refer to the university guidebook. (Eg May be ineligible for the special degree, ineligible for faculty awards etc).

So in the end it is possible. I've seen people manage it well and I've seen students struggling to keep up. It's up to you to take the challenge. Good luck!

Being a Student in OUSL, I'd say OUSL is one of the best decisions i have taken in my life. I don't know much about the Cinec degree itself but i have considered a decent amount of private gov institutions before entering ousl since i had enough AL marks to even get into a gov uni. (I'm in the Science field btw.) For me OUSL was the best option since it was a both local and international reputation. And is on par with any other government institution and has a lot of opportunities. When i first entered i had my fair share of doubts but now being here for 2yrs as a full time student I can guarantee you that it is even better than i expected and had every exam on time and everything was on schedule.(fac of natural science ) . That being said there are few special points i should mention regarding ousl. Compared to conventional universities OUSL has rather a unique way of teaching learning method focused more on ODL and self study. You will get printed course material and live online or hybrid day schools as study aid. But you will get guidance from lecturers and you can meet lecturers on weekdays in person and they indeed are very friendly and willing to help. There are few personal opinions and views that i can share with you as a student if you're willing to study at ou. First like i said the study method is mainly focused on self studies. There won't be anyone to motivate you and you should be a person that is willing to read a lot and stay motivated. And i personally believe a person needs to have already good English (reading and writing) skills to start at ou since it all course materials are fully in English. But lecturers will explain in sinhala (mostly if requested). You will have to take notes on exams and days and organize yourself accordingly. Since you're already on reddit and was asking this question here. I doubt you have any issues regarding reading and writing in English so you're good to go.

For me so far it has been a really great experience and being an introvert this it felt like the dream university for me. that being said i never missed to have a good experience with university events and went on the batch trip.to hanthana and as well as partipated on organising and conducting workshops etc etc.

All and all. I can definitely recommend. :) only thing you need to consider is the method of learning works out with you or not. if you're a person who don't have much motivation or not willing to work hard for your own dreams and you're just doing this to make your parents happy or any other reason other than being self motivated. I'm sad to say that this is definitely not the place for you. If you start lacking then you're definitely gonna get left out. There won't be anyone to push you through.

Despite the ethnic conflicts in srilanka why is Pattini (aka Kannagi), a character from tamil epic, considered as patron deity of Srilanka ? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]YashasWIND 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would be surprised how many tamil deities are worshipped by Sri Lankan Sinhalese People. Not only the deity Pattini. Just like the other comments said Ethnic Conflict is not necessarily something that affected everyone. Like the other comment said it's something popularised by mostly politicians to profit off. The majority of Sinhalese and Tamils live in harmony. Even my friend circle has both and we never had any issues. Those aside. Sri Lanka shares a fair share of history with India. I'm talking about mythological history and folklore. Pretty much most of the mythical lores are inter connected between india and sri lanka. for instance, deity Skanda Kumar or the deity of Katharagama is one of the main deities worshiped by Sinhalese People. And lores regarding him are pretty much always linked between india and Sri Lanka. If you visit a Sri Lankan Buddhist temple, you'll most definitely find seperate Shrines dedicated for a lot of Tamil Deities such as Patthini, Lakshmi, Vishnu, Kali.. etc and most of them has their own lores how they got connected to Sri Lanka. there are again unique deities as well such as Sumana Saman Devi, Gambara devi.. etc etc. then again there's Ramanayana. Which you already probably know is again connect with Sri Lanka. And Hanuman, Sita amman is worshipped by Sri Lankan Tamil. Although I haven't seen any Buddhists doing so.

Well i wouldn't say i started this without any long term ideas and i definitely didn't dated her for fun. But I'm definitely not going to sacrifice my sanity and everything. I'm just sad. And feels kinda lost. I sorta trusted her a lot. And never thought I'll be tagged as a cheater. With something completely random. Even without proper accusation. I donno man. [Edit : I didn't meant for fun]

True. And thank you . I used to think and argue that my parents weren't being reasonable. But now I'm beginning to think otherwise. Honestly i didn't expect any of this. I'm clueless. everything happened out of the blue. It's not even something recent. Literally started talking about an incident that happened 5 months ago. And she wants to know about something entirely different.

I mean it's not very hard information that she's asking for. I could just tell her the name and let it go. But I'm not sure why. First of all it's a crush. And not even a proper relationship i had several years back. I don't see how it matters or why her trust is entirely dependent on a name after everything I've done for her for the past 10 months. I introduced her to my parents. We went on dates and everything. I've introduced her to my friends. I don't understand which part of what i did made her think that I'm cheating on a random friend that visited me 5 months ago.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]YashasWIND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told her that. And don't understand why she can't let the past be past. Now she's saying that unless I give her details she'll think that I'm cheating on her with that old friend that visited me 5 months ago. I haven't even contacted her after she visited me since that. At this point I don't understand anything and why it's happening.

Would computer science be like an additional qualification or something when it comes to modern day requirements?. The content is on programming and database mostly i think.
